We are happy [the Space Shuttle] broke up."

You’re exactly right. The c. 200 000 people who came to Washington on the 18th to protest a possible war certainly won’t be cheering.

>> Irak is full of people like that.

To be fair the US is also full of people who would rejoice on the failures of the Iraqi government and who care little to nothing if it resulted in the death of seven people. Many of those people post in this board. The difference to those people is solely that the Irqis are the enemy and they deserve all they get but they fail to see that, to the Iraqis, the USA is the enemy. Unfairly or not they see the USA as the cause of their suffering so I can understand how they would rejoice in the news.

Hey, fuck-knuckle, why does it have to be the OP? Get of your holier-than-thou “i’ll be pleased when you point out…” high horse and read at least one other post on this thread, to wit:

or

I consider those to be examples of ill-considered generalizations, especially the second.

But plenty of people in this thread salivating in anticipation of the “punishment” they’re about to get…

Are you for fucking real milroyj? You haven’t heard any of your fellow countrymen just itching to go kick some Iraqi butt? You didn’t have attacks on Mosques and schoolkids from a ME background after the events of 9/11? You haven’t heard the 'All Muslims are terrorists" spiel so they deserve everything we will dish out to them? Are you just incredibly naive or are you being intentionally obtuse?

And as for ‘Why have we not heard from them’, well, there are probably a number of reasons. One would be that al Quraishi’s comment makes much better copy than expressions of sympathy. While the US is trying to whip up support for their invasion of Iraq, do you really think that they are going to report on ‘good stuff’ that might be happening? Do you think they are going to point out that folk in the ME are pretty much like us in their human traits, or perpetuate the notion of the inherent evil of the Iraqi people?

Now maybe it is just me who is being naive, but I happen to believe that MOST Iraqi’s are good people who would be feeling sadness for the families of the Space Shuttle mission. And I hold that MOST Americans don’t want to see any deaths in Iraq either. It’s comments like yours though that encourage the differences between people rather than attempting to reconcile our similarities.

Zoe… brilliant.

Gobear… do you wanna tell the people sitting in the back that your comment that all Iraqis hate Americans and Israelis was sarcasm (or should I) ?

Decent human beings the world over will be mourning the deaths of the seven astronauts and give no consideration to where they came from, what colour their skin is, or what religion they followed.

Sadly, there seems to be more than a few people who lack decency and rather than keep it to themselves, must broadcast it to the world.

Mhendo, wake up. Realizing that Israel is universally hated across the Arab world is not an “ill-considered generalization”; its a recognition of reality. If you are going to say that anti-Israel sentiment is a minority view in Iraq…oh crap, I can’t even write that with a straight face.

You’re a fool, Mhendo.

R-i-i-i-i-i-g-ht! If you can find any Arabs mourning the death of Ilan Ramon, I will fellate Dick Cheney.

And torepeat, I am against the war and this Iraqi’s comments make me dislike him only, not his people or his culture. But the way people here blind themselves to the reality of ethnic and religious hatred in the world is just amazing.

And just who, exactly, decided that this bit of bullshit was deserving of being regarded as “news”? Anybody reporting reactions from the streets of Denmark? Lichtenstein? Ukraine?

Of course not, the idiotic blatherings of some lummox from Kiev isn’t news. But some unnamed “Iraqi government official” well, now, stop the presses!

Maybe I’m overly suspicious. I hope I’m overly suspicious.

No, actually, I’m fucking serious. Show me one news story about Americans celebrating Iraqi deaths. Or one picture of Americans dancing in the streets about Muslim deaths, like some Palestinians did after 9/11. Show me one photo of Americans burning Iraqi or Iranian flags, chanting Death to Iraq/Iran. Show me one.

While I don’t think these comments should reflect on Muslims, Arabs, or even Iraqis - they do reflect upon the callousness of the Iraqi regime. I am not really in favor of the war, but Iraq’s regime is about as far away from the priciples of Islam - or any other religions - as one could get.

Despite Iraq’s posturing (placing “God is great” on their flag) - Iraq is a very secular regime. Also, pretty much every victim of Saddam Hussein, Iraqi, Kurd, Iranian, or Kuwaiti, was also a Muslim. For someone who styles himself a modern day Saladdin, he has certainly sent many a devout Muslim to his grave.

I’ll tell ya one thing that really burns me up is these assholes saying that “Allah” fucking killed 7 good human beings! Just pisses me off. If that is their idea of a “good and just” God, they can kiss my ass!!

I just had to get that off my chest. I understand that there are probably a lot of Iraqi’s who don’t feel the way the asshole quoted in the OP does.

– Doctor

Don’t get so uptight about the Iraqui official, dudes.

After all, he’ll be dead soon.

Zoe I can’t believe nobody congratulated you for your wit. Let me be the firts, if I had a million dollars I would give you 10 dollars right know (sorry I am a cheap bastard).

Those Iraquies that cheered are assholes. That doesn’t mean that all iraquies or muslim are assholes to by extension. People that jump to that conclussion are more imbeciles than them, seriously people grow up.
Don’t think that those Iraquies are inhuman they are merely ignorants you shoul pity not hate them, besides they are harmless.
Personaly those 7 men are my personal heroes. They died in a mission of exploration, advancing our knowledge. I don’t think that in aplace which advocates for the fight against ignorance they should be remembered like this.

Oh for goodness sakes. Of course you are not going to have news stories or photos of rabid chanting Americans burning the Iraqi flag. Because that would show that we are just like them.

What I am talking about is more private expressions of hatred towards those from the Middle East. Public displays of hostility are admittedly rare, but that does not mean that there are not Americans or Australians or Europeans who loathe the Iraqis with the same vehemence that some of them despise us. It is blanket statements like yours, that all Americans are good and honourable people while all Iraqis are gun-toting hate mongers that makes me despair.

Of course you’re not, because IT NEVER HAPPENED! I’m not talking about anecdotal evidence of bias, but actual, real, dancing in the streets, chanting Death to Iraq, or Iraqi flag-burning on the part of Americans. CITE?

I’m dissapointed. As naive as it may seem, I’m very dissapointed. I’ve seen a lot of online reports, a lot of newscasts today, and I’m just plumb out of patience:

[ul]
[li]I’m dissapointed that people would take joy in the fact that anyone would hold an accident in a civil space program as “an act of God” and that it was ‘just punishment’.[/li][li]I’m dissapointed that the media was so quick to capitalize on one person’s interpretation of these events, and was just as quick to nickname that opinion as an official position of a government.[/li][li]I’m dissapointed that some people don’t have the healthy skepticism to read some news reports about people cheering in the streets, and may take them at complete face value.[/li][li]I’m dissapointed that we’ve lost 7 good people, in an unfortunate accident without a chance of survival.[/li][li]I’m dissapointed that people are leaping to unconfirmed and uneducated speculation, using the connection of an Israeli colonel to this incident as a springboard. [/li][li]I’m dissapointed people are speculating at all . . .[/li][/ul]

I dunno. Call me naieve. I’m still quietly awaiting answers that may be a long time in coming before I make my own personal judgements.

And what a high horse I ride, sometimes.

Man, it seems to me that American dopers are more interested in promoting ignorance than fighting it.

We act like arabs/muslims don’t have legitimate fucking reasons for hating us. The truth is, it’s all legitimate. All of their grievances are legitimate. They have no voice with which to legally fight us, so they kill us and cheer every time something bad happens to us.

Realize it accept it and start to recognize that being the world government isn’t all it’s cracked up to be.

I would go back and count how many times I read a variation on “there is no hope for the iraqi people” in this thread but it disgusted me too much. Fuck all of you who said shit like that, because if you were Iraqis you’d be the ones cheering. You’re just their American counterparts, so fuck you too.

Re: This whole sad, fucking issue…

Ya know what? My Mother in Law was a wonderful woman. She was in her early 70’s and was all for the space program, no matter who was doing what. Also, she supported the President without regard to what her fellings on the issue of war were because that’s the way that she was raised. An American ALWAYS supports their President.

No matter what fucked up shit the sphincter munchers in the middle east said, she always had something good to say about our military people that were deployed “over there”.

She lived through many wars when our military people were deployed overseas and never had anything bad to say…not ONE FUCKING BAD WORD about our leadership.

Ya know why? Because she was VERY proud to be a member of the American public.

My Mother in Law died this morning and I think she had more real patriotism than the rest of you morons that can’t say anything but how fucked up a President we have…

I probably shouldn’t have posted this but ya know what? I just don’t give a flying fuck any more…it’s always the same assholes bitching about either how fucked up we American’s are or else how much of a fuckup our President is.

Know what? Y’all can just suck my dick. We’re America and we’re ALSO the ONLY real superpower left. What are you gonna do? Cry at us?

In conclusion…blow me.
