We made it!

Yeah, it would have been cool, Audrey, but I have no doubt that it will be just as much fun just to be there with you guys.

Now, what’s this I hear about posters and buying them?? No no, no no no…do not spend your money on them when you can’t really afford it, right now. Remember, I work in a video store, and thus I can be your hook-up on many, many, many posters. I already have a back-log of posters that I’m never going to be able to put up, because I don’t have any room, and many old, but cool, ones.

Now, you can still feel free to get some posters at the auction, but if you’re looking at covering a large amount of space on a small budget, I’m your man. It’ll be a little apartment-warming gift from me to you.

Sigh I used to live on the outskirts of Seattle (when I was a kid, long, long ago), and I went back for a visit about two years ago… At Pike Place Market, is that little donut stall still open? They made the greatest sugared donuts… I remember there was this Underground Tour thing in downtown Seattle, where they’d tell you as much as you wanted to know about Seattle’s history (and more). Did you take the tour yet?

Hope your stuff comes soon

the donut place is definitely still there (mmmm… do-nuts…) and I went on the Underground tour last weekend for the first time. Very fun! One of these times my parents come to town we’re going to do the Ride the Ducks tours. Corny and touristy, I know, but if you can embrace the hoky-ness, it seems like it would be a ton of fun.

For furniture – especially since you’re right there in Renton – I highly recommend IKEA. That’s where Mr. Stargazer and I got most of our furniture. It’s good quality stuff that’s decently priced, and you get the fun of putting it together yourself!

And I am SOOOOOOO tired of Subway sandwiches. I end up having about one a week, since they’re right here on campus. But I miss Togo’s. Quizno’s is good, though – toasted sammiches! Yum! And you two have to try Dick’s – nice and cheap, and they’re all over the place (in Seattle, anyway).

I bank at BECU (Boeing Employees’ Credit Union), and they’re great. If anyone in your family has ever been an employee of Boeing or one of its subsidiaries, you can join. They have great rates. The only drawback is that they don’t have many branches, but that doesn’t bother me – I just go to the ATMs.

Have fun getting settled, and good luck with the job hunt!

Hmmm, last post never posted. I shall try again. As an alternative to the Woodland Park zoo in Seattle, you may consider the Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma. Besides the zoo, there is Fort Nisqually, Owen Beach and the train museum. Also has fantastic views of Puget Sound and the Narrows Bridge. I am partial to Tacoma, I was born and raised there.

A restaurant I recommend is Zoopa near Southcenter. 2 people can pig out for around $20. My grandkids love eating there. It is near the Target across the street from Southcenter. You might also try Bellevue Square, SeaTac Mall in Federal Way or South Hill Mall in Puyallup for a change. All are less than 30 minutes from Renton.

There are 2 Spaghetti Factory’s in the greater Pugetopolis. I would suggest the one in Tacoma, free parking and shorter lines than the one in Seattle. I little secret I have is a BBQ joint between Covington and Black Diamond. It called Rooters. Kind of a dumpy little place but the food is fantastic. Someone suggested Fatburger. The nearest one is in Issaquah next door to the only Krispy Kreme in Western Washington.

If you want to bank at BECU, just tell them I am a cousin. Been a member for over 20 years. I am a B. E. after all.

I can find just about anything your heart desires in the South King/Pierce County area. Let me know what you need.

WELCOME! I am so glad the two of you made it safely, even if your stuff didn’t make it as soon as you did.

silent_rob and I have talked about his plans, and we have tentatively settled on a Seattle DopeFest on July 19th…I will come down for that and then drive Rob back up to Vancouver for a July 20th BC DopeFest, taking him to the Horseshoe Bay ferry on the 21st for the next leg of his journey.

You can count me in for a Langley DopeFest in late June, too. I am actually closer to there than Seattle, so it shouldn’t be a problem.

I can hardly wait to meet the two of you in person!

Much Love,

Cheri

Zoopa
AudreyK’s last post apparently got eaten, but in it she noted that we ate at the Southcenter Zoopa twice in the span of one week. That’s more veggies than I’ve had in the past three months!

Thanks also for recommending other malls. I love Southcenter and all, but a change of scenery would be really nice about now.
BECU
What kind of proof of relationship do they ask for? Because if need be, I have a cousin who - for now at least - still is a Boeing employee. It sounds like it could be cool, especially since they have an ATM just down the street from us!

Ikea
An obscene* amount of the furniture currently in our apartment (like, all of it, except the beds) came from Ikea. I think we got pretty good prices too, even by Ikea standards.

Rob, if you could do that with the posters you’d be welcomed as a god at our place. (I strongly suspect you would be anyway, but that’s besides the point. )

Thank you Scotticher for the warm welcome and we too are looking forward to meeting you, and everyone else, and generally having much fun dopage! (Okay, so that last part didn’t sound quite right, but that’s okay. )

Oh, and the next item on our checklist, for those of you keeping score, is setting up bank accounts and, more for me, getting myself a WA drivers license (Am I going to have to take another driving test? Tests make me nervous.) and getting my car WA registration and plates and stuff.

The state has a nice webpage, should answer all your questions. It is right here.

Heh, awsome, KKB. And not only can I do that with the posters, but I will. If you want to cover a large are, I’ve even got studio-wall posters: those are the ones that are 5 or 6 huge posters that are combined into one. I could probably one bring one of them, because they’re really big and heavy (and in tubes would be even heavier), but I’ll be sure to bring one. I’ll gather some other posters together, too, and hopefully I’ll have a few that you’ll really like. The others…well, you could put them up because they’re colourful.

Scotti, that plan still sounds really great, to me. I’m very much looking forward to it.

Welcome to what is the best damn city on the face of the earth.

And remember, only wimps carry umbrellas, true Seattlites LIKE the rain.

<o---- likes to weird people out by dancing in the rain.

Um, I lived in L.A. for so long that the longest walk I make these days is from my car to the great indoors, so I never carry an umbrella. Does that count?

silent_rob, I think I know what posters you’re talking about - the ones that would line hallways or waiting rooms, or do you mean the ones on the outsides of the buildings? - and I would joke that we should steal them, or billboards, and line the room with them, sticking them to the ceiling where they get too tall.

Probably better in theory than in practice, but then I never thought I’d actually have the chance.

Heh, the ones that line hallways or waiting rooms, I suppose. Not the ones that are on the outside of buildings. If I come by some of those, as well, I’ll keep them in mind.

We don’t actually put them on the walls, though, in my store. Instead, we have this weird multi-frame thing that hangs from where the wall meets the ceiling. They’d be fine on a wall, though. But yeah…I think the one I have is at least 6 posters long, and possibly longer. Not sure, off the top of my head.

I was going to hang it up, but I just don’t have the space. I got it home, and didn’t even have enough room to connect all of it by laying it on the floor of my living room. It would look pretty cool, though, if you did have the space.

That sounds really neat. And, trust me, we have wall space to spare. (You’ll see what I mean when you come to visit.)

OOC, what movie is it for? I mean, it’s not like Hot Shots: Part Deux, or anything, is it? (Not that I have anything against the movie, but I really don’t want giant Charlie Sheen taking up my living room wall.)

Sorry for the upcoming hijack:

There’s a thread in MPSIMS about the prospective Dopefest on Whidbey Island. I can’t link to it because I’m not that good at coding and I’m sneaking a minute at work to post this.

The burning issue (for me, at least) is when exactly the gathering will be held. If it’s the 22nd, Cervaise and I probably can’t be there. The 29th is great for us, but the movie isn’t as appealing that night.

If at all possible, I need a decision on the date by the end of today. There’s still a remote chance I can change my plane ticket to make it back for a gathering on the 22nd, but I would really prefer the 29th.

For those who feel strongly about the date, would you please make your voices heard in the MPSIMS thread?

Thanks very much, sorry about the pressure and the hijack.

P.S. Welcome to Seattle! You’re going to love it here.

Thanks for the welcome, herownself. I’m on my way to the thread right now-- got it open in another window. Thanks for the heads-up.

Hi Cougarfang. We haven’t taken any tours of any sort yet… we’ve driven past a few places, and walked through Pike Place for an hour or so. We felt more like lunch than touring that day, though, so maybe one day when we’re both feeling touristy we’ll take tours and see stuff. Just yesterday we made it to Ballard and found where the zoo was, so hey, we’ll get to know this town yet.

I can’t wait for our stuff to get here! :bounces impatiently:

stargazer, so far as I can tell, there’s one Togo’s here, and it’s like three miles away from us. It’s off Grady Way in Renton. I tried Togo’s for the first time three weeks ago in LA. Mmmm. Good.

Thank you, racer72, for the recommendations. BTW, how’s the Supermall in Auburn? I’ve seen mentionings of it here and there and I was wondering just how super it is. Worth checking out?

Scotti, I’ll be sending you an e-mail shortly. Thanks for the warm welcome. I’m so looking forward to meeting you!

rob, bring what you like, but for all I care you could come empty-handed. Just get here.

Thanks for the welcome, Com2Kid. We’ll keep an eye out for any rain-dancers, and say hi if we see ya.

Well, KKB, the big poster is…heh…The Grinch. Now, whether you still want it, I’m not sure. But it is big, colourful, kind of a landscape, with Jim Carrey’s Grinch smile one the one side. Now, I wasn’t a fan of the flick, but it is kind of a neat poster. If you don’t want that, though, I’ll try and dig up another really big one in the meantime.

As for the other posters, there’s a wide variety. I’ll pick out a few and bring them along with me.

Heh, very nice of you to say, Audrey.
I will definitely be there; no worries about that.

AudreyK, let us know when you feel like going to the Zoo. We are members, and go there at least monthly. We’d love to show you our favorite spots. We are the ZooParents for the Snow Leapords, so we always visit them. The wolves are getting a little less shy these days, so they are tons of fun. And who can resist a baby Gorilla? There’s a new African wild dog exhibit opening soon as well. And the baby elephant (now about 18 months old) is playful and adorable.

The Supermall is an experience. It has it’s own on-ramp. Like every other mall in the area, it suffered with the dot-com crash. But there are a lot of fun stores, including the best place to get top-notch running shoes and sneakers for dirt cheap. $35 for a $115 pair of shoes is the regular price, and sometimes they have sales.

I hear that you met my husband briefly last night - so you’re on the right track!

Whoa, didn’t see this before. Congrats! Like Johnny L.A., I’m still waiting to go. My wife’s there right now and…and, she’s got a second interview coming up (2nd interview with the same company, ie: we’re interested).

So many new people to meet, once I get there. Woo!

Sorry, couldn’t resist.

Congrats, Aguecheek, on the way your job search is going. Hope you’ll be up here soon, as there are apparently Dopefests pending (I missed the threads, but I have my sources  ).

Oh, and Rob I’m fairly ambivalent towards The Grinch as well, but it was a very pretty movie. All things considered, I think I’ll abstain and leave things up to AudreyK.
