Going to Seattle for the annual family visit. Only staying a week this time – two weeks with mom is just too much. And I’m 55 years old. But it’s instructive. I watch, and think “I’m not gonna do that when I’m in my 70’s.” Ha!
Daughter Tracy is going too. She’ll hang with her buddy Steve, who’s been her best friend since 6th grade. Bumbershoot’s this weekend too. She went by herself when she was 14 so she could see Chuck Berry. (We raised her right, that one.)
I’ll get to visit the boys – Mike and his wife just bought a new house. Barry and Chris will have some time off, and we’ll go over to the San Juans, take mom for a drive up around Carnation, and with luck, I’ll get to spend a day with my friend Kim in Port Angeles.
And we’ll drink some Henry’s. And eat some Thai food. Lots of Thai food.
You guys behave while I’m gone. (See? I am turning into my mom!)
I would love to join other Dopers from Puget Sound but it sounds like we’ll have to hurry to catch AuntiePam. Oh, and I’m going to have some minor surgery the end of next week so my window of opportunity is even smaller.
Somewhere I’ve got a list of present and former Dopers who have admitted to being from these parts. If you’re serious, Scotti, about creating a local Dopefest I’ll be glad to help. But like I said, it’ll have to be real soon or wait a couple of weeks for me personally.
Scotti – the new nurse where I work is from Bellingham! Small world.
Pluto – sorry you have to work. I used to live on Beacon Hill – and would often catch the wrong bus getting home and end up in Tukwila. I think it was the 136 or the 132 – twice I had to call someone to come and get me.
I’ll never forget when we first moved there and I heard them testing engines. Was sure something was exploding.
My brother retired from Boeing a few years ago. Folks back here in Iowa don’t believe me when I tell them that the parking lot is bigger than most small towns around here.
And Remlinger Farms – you betcha! We picked blueberries there one year.
Well, sheesh, Pam, and here I got my hopes up and all!
Okay, next year ink us in for a dopefest, okay? Since I live in B’ham, a weekend would be best for me. I don’t work Fridays, so Fri-Sunday would work for me. Maybe if we give enough notice, we can get everybody there.
I hope you have a wonderful vacation here in my backyard, I love this place so I am somewhat biased, but fall is my favorite season. And I love living here no matter what the season.
I do not know your nurse, unless she has a maiden name I know her under. However, if she came from my town she is bound to be a sweetie. We grow them that way, you know?
PS-World Horror Con is going to be in Seattle? Fill me in, I am clueless. And, I am not much of a current horror film fan, I am more of a Boris Karloff/Christopher Lee etc fan. But, I am adaptable.
Well, Johnny dear, I expect you to fly up if we ever manage to arrange a PNW dopefest. After all, you are here in spirit, and better get your butt up here as well.
Plus, you could use the visit to scatter your resume all over the city. Surely some company is in need of your considerable talents, non? Wish I could help you, but I don’t think Bellingham is large enough to offer you much in the way of employment.
Scotti – I already deleted the e-mail announcement but the details will be posted on the Horror Net site and others, so I’ll keep you posted.
Johnny L.A. – poor kid. You’ve been talking about Seattle since you joined this group. We really have to get you up there.
I have kids working at Genie, the City of Seattle, Wizards of the Coast, Safeco Field and Microsoft. Any of those appeal to you? Scan me your resume and I’ll take it along. You have ten minutes. I need to get to bed.
AuntiePam - I would really reccommend visiting the new EMP, except that with Bumbershoot happening this week it’s likely to be really, really, really crowded. Still, it’s pretty nifty if you have a few hours someday. . .
John LA (w)- What kind of work are you looking for? Here at the Times we’re always looking for a few new enthusiastic go-getters . . . to drain of their life forces (Bwah-ha-ha!)
Too bad about that. I really like B’ham. But there’s not much need for data analysts there. Actually, I’m thinking of just picking up and moving to Seattle if I don’t get a position (in Seattle) by Christmas. It’d be totally cool if I could get my boss to lay me off on Christmas Eve. It’d be good for a laugh. Not much chance of that though, since he has no reason to.
I’ve been in contact with some “headhunters”. They say the same thing: “If you were here we could get you a position with no problem!”
Auntie Pam: Have a great trip! Ride a ferry for me.
JDeMobray: Sounds like a challenge! My life force cannot be drained!!!
So, move up here and make the headhunters prove their worth!
(I’m gonna get to a dopefest if it is the last thing I do, and since there are so few of us in this area, the more dopers that live here, the better my chances are)
Yeah. Do it. I have several reasons not to, which I have listed elsewhere, but if I were a young, single (I assume you are single because you fly and are under fifty), and a systems analyst I’d do it. Of course, having loads of family (reason #1) to could live with until settled would help. You can also meet the adorable (check your mail, girl) Scotti, the flying has to be better than around LA, and you’ll get a job lickety split. In fact, the city of Bellvue was advertising for somebody with your talents a few months ago (during my “I’m unemployed with money in the bank. Let’s move to Seattle!” period). You wouldn’t get rich working for a city, but the work couldn’t be easier nor the hours shorter!
Oh, I don’t need that much to live on. I do need enough to get airborne once in a while, and to run some 16mm through the cameras. Cool thing about working for cities is that they get all of the holidays! Got a phone number for Seattle/Kings County?
(BTW: I’m not a systems analyst. I process and analyze data. Boring, but it pays the bills. ;))
