Hey, remember us? Me and KKBattousai, the Hawaii Seattle-bound Dopers?
No? Well, :p!
For those of you who do remember, I just wanted to pop in and say we made it. We landed last Monday, and have spent the last week and a half getting our apartment all homey. And we’re pretty much done with that, at least until the movers bring us our stuff.
We’ve done a bit of exploring on our own (we’ve been to Southcenter virtually every day since we landed, and have seen downtown Seattle and some of the eastside) but it’d be great to get together with some Seattle Dopers. Anyone around? Cervaise, maybe? Can we still get that tour?
Heck, even just dinner with you folks would be great.
Any of you folks still out there and interested in a get-together?
Congratulations, and welcome! I’d still love to do the tour, but until the Seattle International Film Festival is over, I am, perhaps unsurprisingly, quite severely unavailable. Check back in the second half of June…
Congrats on making it! (Hopefully you’re all in one piece!)
(It’s going to take Matson a while to get that ship up to you… and don’t be surprised if they had to fumigate the crates your stuff is in… wash all your dishes/eating stuff before you use it!)
Enjoy exploring the area: and don’t forget to go down to Pike Place Market! (Just be sure to duck the flying fish and skirt around the squirting geoducks!)
<< I’ve seen ‘normal’ and it ain’t pretty, I’ll tell ya. >>
You know, at this point I don’t really care if the movers dipped all our dishes in rancid chocolate and cyanide just as long as they get our stuff to us soon! If not for my having the thought “hey, that thing in the corner there is a computer![sup]*[/sup]” we still wouldn’t be online.
As it is, the two of us are hitting serious PlayStation2/TV/good computer withdrawl.
And don’t worry about being unavailable Cervaise, we quite understand where you’re coming from. You see, we found out about SIFF about 3 hours after we landed (on an expedition to Southcenter Mall, as it turns out) and were initially planning on seeing 29 movies!
However, upon looking at pricing for stuff, we realized that, hey, it would cost us about $150 each to do so.
  <- a snapshot of us after doing the math
We decided, instead, to limit ourselves to about 9 movies. :sheepish smiley:
Hope we didn’t miss anything that we’ll regret later. (Any idea how Das Experiment was?)
Anyway, needless to say, we’re looking forward to meeting you all as soon as everyone’s able (for the record, it’s amazing how much you can get done in a week when you’re unemployed…).
Um, AudreyK is giving me the “I want to use the computer” look quite acutely right now so, um, see you later?
*I use the term “computer” loosely. It’s a POS 120 MHz IBM laptop with a glitchy screen, an even glitchier dialup connection (Windows 95 will randomly decide that it doesn’t want dialup to work anymore, at which point we have to reboot, an operation with a fairly dismal success rate itself), and a keyboard with keys that stick. But, hey, it’s something.
Heh, rob, you’re darn tootin’. The furniture and heavier stuff aside, I think it would have been faster (and probably cheaper) to have my parents mail us all our stuff! … well, maybe, maybe not, but when you’re waiting for your stuff, it sure seems that way…
Hey Cervaise! We were in line for one of the first FF movies, and it occurred to me you’d be seeing FF films too and I mentioned to KKB that hey, maybe, you were in line or in a theater with us or something.
We’ll be done with films around the middle of June, too, so… if the offer’s still good, we’re still game.
Thanks, Nightsong. Heh. I read the part where you wrote “hope you’re in one piece” and I thought, oh, probably not, the rest is packed away with the movers… :sigh: As it is, we’re in great shape, given the amount of lifting and stair climbing (we live on the 3rd floor, and there are no elevators) and plain ol’ busy-ness we’ve had in the last two weeks.
We’ve already been to Pike’s-- it’s pretty much what I thought it’d be like. It’d be nice to go back one day soon. I wanna go back and see the aquarium.
Hi Audrey and KK. I’m glad to hear your trip went well.
I was just thinking about you two as I was driving past your old complex yesterday, and what you two were up to. I’m still sad I didn’t get to meet up with you guys before you left.
Welcome to Seattle! I thoroughly recommend the aquarium although I haven’t been there in quite a while. Baby gorillas at the zoo are always fun to watch too. And the weather report says it’s supposed to be a nice weekend.
Pikers! I shelled out over $350 for a slate of almost 50 movies.
It was amazing, but very tough to watch. I’ve got a review on my website if you’re interested; I’m writing up everything I see during the fest.
More likely than not. If you want to email me the movies you’re planning to see (see my website for the address), I’ll let you know if any of them are on my slate, and we can look for each other.
I must’ve missed the thread about where you’ve actually settled, so fill me in! Have you found jobs? Now we’ll definitely have to do another PNW Dopefest!
Hey!! Welcome! So, where did you folks land? I am a Capitol Hill guy myself, but may be looking for cheaper digs. Have not had a car a large part of the time that I have been here (so no malls and the like), but can second the Pike Place Market suggestion. Also, if you like parks, I am in love with the park above the freeway (it may be called “Freeway Park”). It is above the convention center (also on Pike Street).
The Clyde Theatre in Langley (up on Whidbey Island) is showing ‘Monsoon Wedding’ June 21-24 (FSSM). With the Dog House Tavern (Guiness & Boddingtons on tap) and Backdoor restaraunt just across the street, I think all the ingredients for a fine Dopefest are in place, except planning.
Show times are 6:00pm & 8:30pm Friday and Saturday. So, we could meet for the movie at 6:00pm, then dinner after; or have an early dinner with movie after.
Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll launch a thread with more details, including directions and ferry info.
Wait, wait, wait…I’m coming to visit you in July, and a mere few weeks earlier there’s an international film festival?? Dang…talk about bad timing on my part.
Ah well…I guess two international film festivals is enough for this year, already.
We ended up in Renton, which I think we both like as it’s proven (thus far, anyway) to be a managable distance away from Seattle and Tukwila/Southcenter, which we’ve decided officially has everything we could possibly need (with the possible exception of an Old Spaghetti Factory).
Once we have some leisure time we probably will hit a park or two and we’ll make sure to check out the ones you mentioned. Personally, I’m looking for somewhere to take a nightly (or, depending on location, weekly or semi weekly) constitutionals or some honest to goodness hiking.
Settled? Jobs? BWAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!
:wipes tears of mirth(?):
Despite the groaning of my credit cards under the weights to which I have recently subjected them, we’re not quite settled in yet. In addition to our impatient waiting for the movers, we still need a couple pieces of furniture (a desk for my room, and a coffee table), just got our beds today (at 8:30 in the AM, no less), still need to get sheets for the beds (though comforters, ordered online, are on the way and are somewhere between Oregon and Tukwila), and are still waiting on the TV we bought from Video Only (I missed the Smallville season finale! ).
We also have a desperate need for decorations as all we have ATM are a couple anime wall scrolls, and autographed Gorillaz posters that one of my old college roomies gave us. As of now, we’re planning on hitting the SIFF movie poster auction where we’re planning to find absolutely nothing we’ll be able to afford. :sigh:
As for jobs, we’re both ostensibly looking, though we’ve been too busy to really start yet. (And the fact that all the different incarnations of my resume are on a computer presently in custody of the movers isn’t helping any.)
Lucky. :envy smiley: But moving and resettling is hurting like a mofo at the moment and we were feeling kinda penny-pinchy when we walked into the main ticket office. I’m looking forward to reading your reviews, though. (Though why I am, seeing as how it’ll invoke yet more feelings of envy and loss, is a mystery.)
Oh well, more time for job hunting (read: sight-seeing) I guess.
Will do, though I warn you now that due to our personal inclinations (and probably more than a little force of habit), our slate reads a little more like the “Seattle Japanese Film Festival” than anything else. We’re also thinking that it’s a little harder to go wrong with good ol’ action and horror movies as the combination of homesickness and holocaust re-creation movies might not be the healthiest thing in the world.
Oh, don’t worry, we’ll be visiting sooner or later.
Have you guys had/planned the first Hawaii Dopefest yet?
And, yeah, I think we miss Hawaii at least a little, though to be honest, we’ve been keeping to busy for me, at least, to have given it too much thought. FWIW, my subconcious is picking up the slack as at least a few of my more recent dreams were located in Hawaii, leaving me with a sense of…loss(?) upon waking.
AudreyK for her part, has misread at least one sign as saying “Zippys” though it said nothing even remotely resmbling that.
But, yes, moving has been quite the adventure ('specially since it’s the first time for AudreyK), but a most worthwhile one, I’d say. And let me say that after living in L.A. for a year, that moving to the evergreen state is quite a welcome change. (Sorry Johnny, I’m sure you’ll be here soon enough. )
On another subject, I think both AudreyK and I have two questions on our mind right now.
Can anybody recommend a bank? We’re planning on Washington Mutual, but are open to suggestions.
What’s up with all the Subways? I think we’ve seen more of those than we’ve seen McDonalds. Hell, I think we’ve seen more than we’ve seen gas stations!
I haven’t seen Monsoon Wedding yet (perish the thought!), so cool. Also, in my studied opinion, the Dog House has the best fish-n-chips in Washington State. Thumbs up from me.
Washington Mutual is probably the best choice of a not especially good selection. I’ve been mulling the possibility of switching to them myself, but haven’t because changing banks is such a hassle.
You’re right, we’ve got a ton. But then, every place has its own franchising quirks; I remember being amazed at all the Dunkin’ Donuts on a drive through Vermont once. I don’t know if there’s anything about us specifically that makes the sub shop a good investment; the few Blimpie’s I’ve seen haven’t done so well and usually closed pretty quickly.
I’m beginning to wonder… I heard in a meeting today that the company that will be taking over the stuff I do wouldn’t be ready to start doing it for two years… if they started right now.
Geez, I don’t want to have to quit (and miss out on something like $14,000 severence pay, plus unemployment elegibility); but I’ve requested my file from the DSS and have started looking at other jobs up there.
Hi LolaBaby! I do miss Hawaii… some things remind me of home and I get a touch of homesickness. Like, we’ll go through the International District, and I’ll think of Daiei or Chinatown. :sigh: But we’ve been keeping busy enough that we don’t have time to really think about it, whether that’s a good thing or not.
The next time KKB and I are in town, we’ll have a Hawaii Dopefest. I can’t think of anything funner for a visit back home.
pendgwen, I’ve wanted to see the zoo, too. Have the address written down and everything. I like zoos (as evidenced by the schools I went to and neighborhoods I’ve lived in).
Cervaise, I’ve just e-mailed you, and inna minnit I’ll read your reviews. Thanks again for offering to show us around.
stargazer and Binarydrone, thanks for the welcome. As KKB mentioned, we’re in Renton, and we like it very much so far. Pretty much everything we’ve needed has been either a short walk or a short drive away. And that park sounds neat-- we’ll look for it next time we’re nearby.
Hope to meet you both at a DF soon.
Danalan, that sounds absolutely cool, and we’re definitely interested!
rob, yeah, I think it would have been so neat if you could have been here for the FF. Oh well. You’ll still have a blast when you get here.
Johnny– Definitely a Wienerschnitzel. It’s funner to say.
