This is different from other “what’s your favorite website” threads in that I’m looking for sites with loads of interesting content - sites that you could spend 16 hours reading, go to sleep, wake up the next morning, and pick up where you left off.
I like CourtTV’s Crime Library. I’ve been stuck on this one for a couple of weeks now. It’s chock full of fascinating true crime stories, some of it so unbelievable that I’m surprised I’ve never heard of it before. Mary Bell is one such example. A ruthless, cold-blooded, sociopath, she killed two children in the 60s and would have kept on killing had she not been caught. The kicker? She was ten years old! Yikes!
The site isn’t perfect. You’ll find the occasional misspelling or typo here and there, but you aren’t going to get Shakespeare for free. Oh, wait. Bill has been dead for several hundred years and his work is in the public domain. So maybe you can get Shakespeare for free, but I’m still going to stick with my original phrasing. “You can’t get Crichton for free” doesn’t quite carry the same weight.
Well, I recall it took the better part of a day to read through all of Cecil’s articles.
Once I spent most of the day listening to archived shows of Wait wait - Don’t tell me!. (Of course that’s not really reading, and I was doing other stuff while listening.)
I have been reading a public domain copy of Mark Twain’s “LIfe on the Mississippi” as research for a novel I’m writing, but it’s been so much fun it doesn’t feel like work.
This site is all about the accuracy of urban legends. You can easily spent a few days going through all the content. The most important thing is, it’s actually interesting enough that you would want to.
Darwin awards. If you don’t know about this great site then your missing out. The archives should kill a few days (or weeks) and have you laughing your ass off.
This site doesn’t have much content per se but it has hundreds of links to check out. The sheer amount of stuff was kinda intimidating actually. Warning, this site has adult content.
crimelibrary is also a good one. try reading the albert fish story. that was one creepy man.
i promise i’m still working on my paper. it’s almost done. i might even get some sleep tonight.
I just came back to the boards here, and I can spend all day at the main straightdope site, too. Actually, I think I may have read all the classic columns, so maybe I won’t be spending as much time there.
Snopes is a biggy, and so is the Allman Brothers Band website.

When I discovered The Onion they had all their older articles divided up into several categories (consumers, society, religion, etc.) and it was easy to see all the articles at once, so I spent several days going back to read all the articles.
If you are into biology, then www.biology-pages.info is great. It has tonnes of stuff on every biology related topic imaginable.
Alternately, if physics is more your style, then www.physics.about.com has a (relatively) massive range, from the basics right through to M-Brane theory, superstring theory and all sorts of other wierd and wonderful stuff.
Sorry Czarcasm, I should have checked that site beforer posting.
If anyone is into Dilbert, one of the best strips I’ve ever seen, then you should check out his site. He has a archive of past strips and it’s all FREE.
