WebTV, not-so-new TV and DVD/VHS Combo. Will they work together?

I want to buy my dad a DVD/VCR combo, but I’m not sure it will work with his set-up. Right now he has a Sony TV that is about 6 years old hooked up to his cable box and WebTV. From his description, his TV has red+white+yellow connectors that are occupied, and red+white that are open. He couldn’t tell me which cables are hooked to the TV or anything else. I don’t know anything about WebTV and I’ve never set up a DVD/VCR combo before. Please help me introduce my dad to the greatness of DVD!

Thanks,
Pash

Red and white are audio channels, yellow is video. You either need a setup with all three, or a setup with one “video” and one “audio,” where you’d combine the two audio channels.

Does the WebTV box have any inputs? (Either red/white/yellow or an RF input (screw, like TV cable)?

Does the TV have an RF input? (Probably does)

You could always buy an A/V selector like this one that allows you to hook more than one thing up to the occupied red/white/yellow jacks.

$40 is a bit expensive, but you could get one for much cheaper without the S-video jacks (the black plugs). I’m much too lazy to find one now, though. I need sleeeep…

Okay, I’ve got more info. Troy McClure, the WebTV has r/w/y inputs that are connected to the r/w/y jacks on the TV (no other jacks on the WebTV box). Here is the DVD/VCR Combo I plan on buying.
Mikahw, thanks for the tip on the A/V selector. Hopfully I won’t need it, but it’s nice to know I have options. I’ll look around for one w/o S-video.

Thanks for the help,
Pash

I found a picture of the jacks on the DVD/VCR Combo. It has both r/w/y inputs and outputs. It also says “You can connect the TV to the Player by using only one set of A/V cables, thus achieving a hassle free connection. Further, you can enjoy both the DVD Player and VCR with only one connection, which reduces the inconvenience that can occur when you connect separated players.”
So, do you think I can connect on set of r/w/y cables OUT from the DVD/VCR, IN to the TV, and another set of r/w/y cables OUT from the WebTV, IN to the DVD/VCR?

Now: TV(in)—rwy—WebTV(out)
Proposed: TV(in)—rwy—DVD/VCR(out), DVD/VCR(in)—rwy—WebTV(out)

And of course, one coaxial cable would go from the wall to the DVD/VCR, and another from the DVD/VCR to the TV.

It sounds just crazy enough to work! The only thing I’m not sure about is if I can route the WebTB through the DVD/VCR like that. What do you think?

Thanks,
Pash
