Poll on the way…

ETA: Please note that the poll will still be “open” after some games have begun.

I will close the array before game time(s).

It’s good to see my Auburn Tigers crack the top ten for the first time in a couple of years. Nice to see you back, fellas. I wouldn’t be all that surprised if somebody knocks them off before the end of the season, but it’s not going to be the Razorbacks. War Eagle.

And go 'Noles, I guess. That’s my only pick for this week. FSU 34, Miami 24.

I went with Florida St to lose this week.

I figure that with the drubbing Bama handed UT yesterday that they’ll be looking for blood from Mizzou. I just wish I felt better about Purdue’s and Virginia’s chances.

It seems odd to me that 8 of the top 25 are resting this next weekend. Four of the Top Ten.

Does it have to do with laurels or something?

I was actually shocked that anybody picked anything other than Miami. Maybe I’ll be the one that’s shocked, but I can’t see any team in the top 3 (Bama, FSU and Oregon) losing to anyone outside the top 3.

FWIW, the spread on the FSU-Miami game is currently 22; I don’t think FSU will cover that.

I believe you’re wrong on that. This is a game where the starters will not be pulled until late in the 4th (assuming a big lead) and given the poll standings, there is some advantage to running it up for this game.

Our schedule from here out is atrocious, the teams we play are a combined 12-18 (Wake Forest, Syracuse, Idaho, and UF) and only one has a winning record (Florida at 4-3 and they are likely to be at or below .500 by the time we play them). This is probably our last chance at the national stage to impress the pollsters until the ACC Championship - when it’s likely too late.

I’m afraid that due to the damn preseason polls we’re going to need Oregon or Alabama to drop one to make the Big Game. Dammit! Why couldn’t the playoff have started this year?

Miami is facing a tough chore. They’ve been squeaking by, but now they face a really hot team with a great young QB. I’d say Las Vegas knows what it’s doing and if Miami is within three scores they will have done well.

I hear ya both, but FSU didn’t cover the spread last week against NC State. And I think Miami will be playing as well as they can; this is a huge rivalry (as I’m sure you both know).

Believe me, I hope we whomp 'em by like 80 points, in a shutout, while holding their team to less than 40 yards of total offense. But as a guy who sat in the stands for Wide Right 1, well… I know that hope isn’t something to rely on, not when it comes to this matchup.

Well, the 2nd and 3rd string defenses played the entire 2nd half and Winston only played six downs. The spread was actually covered by half-time and it was just a couple of meaningless late TDs that closed things back up (plus I believe they only missed it by 2 - was the game time spread still 34.5?). And Jimbo explained his thinking (and I agreed with it) better to be healthy for The U then cover the spread against hapless NC State.

As for the fear, yeah, it’s a rivalry, but I just can’t see Miami matching up with us for 4 quarters. Our top 3 receivers are monsters and will probably all play in the NFL assuming they stay healthy. Benjamin could be the next Megatron.

I’m delaying the posting of the picks array until the Halloween names are changed back. Keep 'em coming.

Since my name got changed back, but at least one on this list has not changed, I’m uncertain about some new names on the list. If yours needs changing to your “pre-Halloween” name, just PM me to that effect and I’ll fix it.

I’ll be posting (and closing) the picks array at 11:00 Central, since Ohio State kickoff is at that time.

You have until then to join the party.

Post #12 has the final array. Good luck on your picks!

Since nobody selected Ohio State, and since that was the only game to have started before the poll officially closed, I have included a late vote and stripped out the Ohio State column to give this final picture:

Regarding the cumulative scoring, a couple of people have contacted me asking why there are no penalties assessed for incorrect picks. I explained my reasoning, but I have decided to change it a bit starting next week. Not this week as there were too many picks already in when I made the decision about changing the rules. However, starting week 11 there will be a half point deducted for each incorrect pick. This should still encourage people to go a little risky, but take away the incentive to just pick everybody. Anyway, here’s how we are going in to week 10:

End of week 9 totals. Cumulative scoring. No penalties for incorrect picks, 1pt awarded for each correct pick.

5 pts: Munch, Oakminster, Wolverine

4 pts: **armedmonkey, Labrador Deceiver, Oredigger77, Zakalwe **

3 ps: astorian, LuckyNumber85, R.P. Murphy, Zeldar

2 pts: bump, death of rats, RetroVertigo, Snowboarder Bo, Sterling Archer, willia4

1 pt: Chargerrich, Fred Garvin, janeslogin, Jimmy Chitwood, jsc1953, markdash, Really Not All That Bright, Rex Goliath, The Universe Lashes Out, yellowjacketcoder

0 pts: Accidental Martyr, basset hound, Duckster, furt, Johnny Bravo, NicorGasMan, Quintas, racer72, Rucksinator, skammer, Tazmanian Devil, zamboniracer

WOOT! Go 'Noles!

That picking Florida State to lose thing didn’t work out so well for me.
