Weird color problem with clickable links

This just started out of the blue a few days ago. I click on a link like a thread title or title of the forum I want to enter and the link goes very pale grey. I realize some links change color when you click them but my issue is that they are now permenantly that pale grey color.

I have logged out, cleaned cookies, refreshed pages, the original color never comes back.

And even weirder is it isn’t doing this on all websites. I noticed it immediately here at SDMB because I’m so used to the royal blue color of the links. Now any forums or threads I’ve entered since this started are so pale grey I can barely see them.

I’m using XP. My browser is firefox, has been for a year now. Haven’t made any changes to my settings. I tried a system restore, didn’t fix it. I am at a loss.

Any ideas???

Well, the a:visited property in the stylesheet for SDMB uses color 22229C, which appears a shade of gray on my monitor.

Perhaps you have inadvertantly set your monitor’s brightness or contrast to a level that the gray does not show up well – I have a monitor at work that is normally quite dark, so I turn the brightness up on it. When I do so, the gray that’s down here in the “quick reply” box looks white.

I installed a new driver for my monitor a few weeks ago but this juust started this week. There have been no chenges I can see in my monitor settings.

The text and banner color for SDMB has always been royal blue on my monitor, and that has not changed, only the links I have clicked are the grey color. What I don’t understand is that before this, they always reverted back to the blue, but now they don’t. :dubious:

I suppose I could have bigger problems, but it’s like a piece of popcorn stuck in my teeth, it’s driving me batty!!

Does it look like this?
My screen cap

Yep! Thats what it’s doing. Any idea why they stay that way though?? They never did before.

For instance, I don’t frequent all the forums, so now I have blue text for the ones I never go into, while my frequently visited forums are permanantly grey.

Oh and I just checked a couple of other sites I visit, this problem isn’t happening at those sites. I click, and when I go back to the first page all link colors are restored.

Well, it’s doing exactly what it’s supposed to do. SDMB is set up (in the coding for the pages) to turn visited links that color. Perhaps all that has happened is that you have just noticed it? If it was not doing it before then maybe:
[ul]
[li] SDMB was not set to turn visited links this color in the past (I have bad color memory, but I don’t think anything has changed in this regard)[/li][li] Your browser was set to ignore instructions to change the color of visited links and you turned off that setting without knowing it (perhaps you have a wonky FF extension that interferes with the way this works)[/li][li] Opal did it[/li]
[/ul]

As for the other sites, they may not be set to change the color of visited links.

:frowning:
Okay.

I’m not sure who Opal is, but since I can’t find any other solution, that is who I’m going to blame. :stuck_out_tongue:

Thank you for your assistance aktep

Your browser does that based on whether it finds the pages in its cache. if so, they’re considered visited and are gray. If not, they’re not visited and blue.

By clearing the SDMB pages out of your cache you can reset them all to blue. NI’m not sure exactly how to do that in Firefox, but it oughta be easy enough.

In your Firefox options, under Privacy/History there is a length of time that links stay in the cache and are ‘remebered’. The default is 20 days, but if you set it to 0 days, I think it may return to what you remember.

Maybe.

I dunno, I’m not going to try it myself, it’ll mess up my own History.

Bingo!!

Until I saw your post I forgot that I had reset my history settings a few days ago! I used to have it set on 0, but I changed it to 2, no reason really, just had too much time on my hands I guess so I was playing around. :smack:

My blue links are back and the dismal gray text is gone!

Many many thanks to everyone who chimed in!!

But, uh, that color coding is there for a reason, so you can tell which sites you’ve visited! Mine’s set for the maximum length of time Firefox will allow - 9999 days, I think. It’s totally supposed to be like this.

Agreed. I find it a highly useful feature. If I come back after a day or two of being away, it’s VERY difficult to find threads I’ve been participating in without the grey links. I could subscribe to the threads, of course, but that tends to generate an unmanageable amout of email, particularly with a high level of participation.

I turn off emails and click the subscribed threads link in Quick Links.

Call me crazy but it bugged me to death, all that dull gray text. If it was just for that session I wouldn’t mind but they stayed that way even when I logged out & returned. I dunno, I guess I just like the pretty colors!

But at any rate, I appreciate the help!
