Weird situation: would you have stayed?

Do we have a term yet for when a thread gets overrun by people going off the deep end and taking a small thing and blowing it completely out of proportion?

If not, might I suggest “threadrape”?

Yeah. ‘Ick’ is totally out of proportion to a rape joke.

Unless you were suggesting that peanuthead’s thing is small, which I believe is against IMHO rules, tsk, tsk.

Did you miss the part where, every time he tried to do what she asked, she cranked up the abuse further? And if “doing what she ask” is more important than “helping her effectively”, then how was he wrong to leave? Heaping abuse on someone is, in all practical terms, a request that that person go away.

Again, it was the stranded woman’s decision that the OP go away, and she’s entitled to make that decision.

I apparently did miss the part where the stranded woman requested that the OP go away.

Directed anger and abuse is not the same as general panic.

No, that her nastiness escalated was clearly stated in each of my posts. Calling 911 was a perfectly reasonable request for her to make. Point remains that he didn’t have a good reason to not do as she asked. In fact not doing so exposed him to more nastiness and probably contributed to the escalation as she became more and more upset that he didn’t call 911.

He didn’t have to sit there and be screamed at. But he also didn’t have to leave. Go to his office, sit in his car, walk to the other side of the lot, but be available until the cops come. The op asked the question and my answer is: I would have stayed and he should have stayed, too.

Yeah, people.

Rape isn’t funny.

Fun, but not funny.

I actually predicted the rape joke would appear when I first read the OP.

Unzipping your fly is usually a necessary step in dropping your pants.

If I’m at a party, and someone makes a joke about cancer, and I say, “That joke makes me feel horrible; my mother just died of cancer!”, am I:

a) just making conversation
b) trying to lighten the atmosphere a bit
c) trying to make sure the person who makes the joke or any others nearby don’t make any similar additional comments

Or is there some other motive that I am missing?

In any case, my point was not whether rape jokes should or should not be told, or whether people should nor should not voice their dislike of them. I just found it amusing how joke/pun contest threads about people dying in bizarre ways seem to be fairly popular and rarely evoke criticism, yet a rape joke about something that did not even take place immediately gets people’s hackles up.

About what? I didn’t see anything upsetting in this thread.

Well, I don’t know what you are trying to do in this situation. But I’d say this. Everybody has had or knows somebody who has a tragedy of some kind. IMO if you can’t handle a rape joke because, mmmkay, rape is like bad, then you sure better not be ever be chuckling about another other joke that has somebody, even imaginary things to imaginary people, having anything remotely bad happening to them. And if you do, you still don’t have to like the joke but IMO you are being a hypocrite for complaining about it.

To get back to the OP at least temporarily, the OP should certainly have called 911 or even taken it upon himself to break the window. A potential loss of limb is certainly an emergency, and the only reason to even consider alternatives is if there might be one that would respond quicker than 911.

And, that said, I’m not overly impressed with the OP at all. This lady has been stuck in her car window screaming for help for half an hour, and he gets bent out of shape due to her attitude? Show a little compassion, and a little understanding, and deal with getting yelled at instead of inserting a stick up his ass.

I’ll tell you what I thought about the rape joke and the show me your tits joke, and I don’t have a stick in my ass or a man-hating attitude.

It made me think that here are a bunch of guys, some I like, some I don’t and some I never gave a second thought to … but I never in a million years thought that one of them ever considered raping me or trying to take advantage of me sexually, and now I see that I was wrong. It made me stop and think about who else in my life I may be wrong about.

How long had she been stuck there?

A long stay could have sharpened anybody’s temper.

I vote for “should have stayed”.

You really think they might try to rape someone because they made a joke about it? People make jokes about murder (“I’m going to kill him if he doesn’t turn the TV down”) but you don’t actually think someone’s going to assault/kill another person as a result.

If that’s your standard for someone who “considered raping me or trying to take advantage of me sexually,” then the answer is, by your standard, everyone.

I dunno - I always find this sort of thing funny precisely because the guy making the joke never would consider doing the actual deed. Kind of like a legless guy saying “be careful or I’ll jump outta this chair and put my boot up your arse”

Did everyone make references to rape or show me your tits remarks?

No it wasn’t. You don’t tie up emergency services so you can save on the cost of a window.

She wasn’t in a true emergency.

In fact, if her arm was so trapped for half an hour that she couldn’t withdraw it from the window, emergency services are entirely appropriate. It’s likely that she would have been fine, and I offered the suggestion that the OP could have broken the window himself, but she needed emergency medical attention regardless.

Neither you, nor I, nor the OP know whether or not her arm was permanently damaged.
