Weird spam- notice appearing in my Outlook calendar without accompanying email

Over the last few months I’ve occasionally gotten an entry in my Outlook calendar that I didn’t put there. I got one today.

It’s clearly spam, something like “Your <whatever> subscription will be renewed on <date>.” There’s no more detail than that and no email or text to go with it. It’s just supposedly scheduled for some near-future date. These are things like McAfee that I don’t subscribe to and that don’t have any billing info from me.

Of course, I delete them, but geez, this seems like a really stupid type of spam. How is anyone making money on something like this? There’s no link in the entry, so it’s not like you can follow a link somewhere to buy the product.

This has been happening to me, too, on Google calendar. I barely use Google calendar. My SIL set it up for me so I could see the grands’ schedule - maybe that triggered something? But it’s always messages about this or that subscription (that I never had) being renewed. Definitely weird.

Thanks for the reply. Interesting. I don’t use google calendar and I don’t use gmail either. I do use my Outlook calendar constantly.

Here’s a ton of info about how to deal with calendar spam in various email systems:

Woo-hoo, the Dope always comes through!

Mine have just been calendar entries without any invitation or opportunity to reply. I delete them immediately. Next time I’ll see if there is an option to block.

Ya gotta wonder if people are really dumb enough to fall for this stuff.

I know. Never mind.

Seconded, but for a different reason.

I was looking at the instructions provided by the above link to make sure that my settings were correct. They were, but then I noticed something else that was enabled in my Google calendar; namely, ‘Automatically add Google Meet video conferences to events I create’.

I NEVER use Google Meet, so I was baffled as to why that option always appeared when I created an event. But it will not happen again!

I suspect your Outlook is configured to just accept calendar invitations in inbound email and remove the email (since it’s on the calendar now).

I’ve looked at all the settings and options and I don’t see anything remotely like that. Another one showed up today. And nothing shows up in my webmail email which is where it lands before it goes to Outlook. It goes straight from the ether onto the calendar without passing through my webmail.
