Weirddave's Football Dopefest

Well, lets see. With snacks cut and burgers made, I waited for folks to show up. The first person here was Jonh Corrado, who brought such an astounding array of soda and chips that the rest of us spent the whole day worrying that the cops were gonna break up our little get together and bust him for robing a 7-11. RTFirefly showed up next bearing imported beer, followed shortly by Pldennison who brought homemade guacamole, veggies and Iampunha. We had settled in to enjoy the games when Falcon got here, brightening the entire day. Shortly thereafter JTR arrived with his lovely SO Linda, and I was out of chairs! I scraped some up, even if I did spend most of the day sitting on a kick stool.

We proceded to watch the Browns/Ravens game, with Phil glued to the sports ticker, despertly hoping for the right teams to win and lose so the Indians would make the playoffs. Unfortunately, it didn’t happen. Sorry Phil. Falcon found, by some strange coincidence, that every drink she was served came in a Baltimore Ravens glass, or with a stuffed Raven attached to the cup. Weird. Kim and JTR and Linda found they had a lot of common interests and spent most of the game deep in conversation, while 'punha suprised us all by rooting not for certain teams, but only for certain players in his FF league. Double weird. JC just sat in the corner and looked inscrutable, throwing out bon mots as apropriate. At halftime, I fired up the grill, and all the burgers I had made were quickly consumed, including two bean burgers brought by Phil.( Phil, you left the other 2 here. What the hell am I gonna do with them???)

After the Ravens disposed of the Browns in workmanlike but unspectacular fashion, The 'Skins/Bucks game drew more interest, as most folks here are 'skins fans. It was also a better game. Washington won, and everyone gathered up their stuff and departed. IMHO a good time was had by all, and I’d be willing to do it again anytime.

John, thanks for coming, sorry you left with about as many snacks as you came with.

Phil, sorry bout the tribe, but I hope you enjoyed the party here.

'punha- I never did figure out, did you win or lose in FF?

JTR, it was great meeting you and Linda, and now that you’ve had a taste of dopefests, I hope to see you at the next one.

Falcon, I’m happy you came, I know you’ve been stressing about work stuff, and hopefully this relaxing day was a tonic for you.

RTFirefly, glad to have you and hope your drive wasn’t too long.

And that’s about it. Anyone else who wants to chime in their recolections of the day is more than welcome.

Linda and I had a lot of fun, Dave. Thanks for arranging and hosting the get-together yesterday. My only regret was that we couldn’t stick around longer and circulate and chat with more people. We also loved that beautiful old house you live in and the location up on the hill. And we both raved about those delicious hamburgers on the drive back. Spectacular!

To everyone: Good to meet you all! As a newbie, I felt like I was in illustrious company. Thanks for making us feel at home!

And to ‘punha: A special apology to you for causing you to change chairs mid-way through the game. I felt bad taking such a prime location from you, especially since I spent most of my time chatting rather than watching the game. I’ll try to make it up to you somehow the next time we do one of these get-togethers.

Thanks again, Dave!

Dave, I’ve gotta say I had a great time, and it was well worth the drive - and besides, I expect Phil had a longer drive than I did.

It was fun to get together with everyone, the football games turned out the right way (yea 'Skins!), and the repartee was wonderfully sharp, expecially when making fun of the insights (yeh, right!) of John Madden and Pat Summerall, the broadcast team for the Redskins game.

I made fun of the way the refs ALWAYS say ‘illegal motion (or false start), offense, before the snap’, just before the only time in the past three seasons that I’ve heard a ref leave the ‘before the snap’ qualifier off. They must’ve planted a microchip in my brain; at least, that’s what Phil suggested. What’s the frequency, Kenneth?

JTR and I had a fun time comparing notes on the life of a gummint bureaucrat, and we all had a good time putting images in Falcon’s mind that she’d love to have permanently erased (especially that hot, sweaty John Madden).

My wife says she’s not a football widow, she’s a Dope widow. She pointed out that, while football season comes to an end, Doping doesn’t; I suggested that this was an incentive for her to join in on the fun. Maybe one of these days…

…we had too good a time to let this one sink so quickly!

First off, yes, being with y’all helped take my mind off work. Thanks. smooches to all

Second…it was a LOT of fun. I’d forgotten how much fun watching with other people could be…around here I have to slink off to my room alone on Sundays. Even if Dave kept giving me crap with a Ravens logo on it… And the Redskins game ROCKED. I’m still so excited that they pulled it off. Oh, and watching Phil all afternoon over baseball was pretty funny too.

Thanks to Dave for throwing this and making the KICKASS burgers. And thanks to everyone for coming…it was great to see some old faces, and meet a new one! (JTR, you better come to the next Dopefest!)

And I’ll make the offer now…as soon as I get into my new place, I’ll offer to do the same thing at my place in November.

I was really hoping to come, but I got stuck doing wedding stuff all weekend. I really wanted to meet some of the DC area dopers! I am moving Friday, so as soon as I get furniture I will hold something at my apartment in Alexandria! It sounds like everyone had a blast. I hope to meet all of you soon.
