When my parents were getting divorced, my sister and I, 3 and 4 years old, spent Christmas with our grandparents–in another city, yet. I have quite a vivid, and incidentally very happy, memory of the occasion. We were not abandoned. We were not neglected. If anything, it allowed us to have a wonderful, pleasant Christmas at a time when emotions and stress were running high the rest of the time. And hell if my mom had some sacred duty to conform to anyone’s idealized fantasy of what Christmas has to be for every kid in the world.
We don’t know all the details in this case. But we do know that the grandparents who the kids were with had custody of them. We don’t know why the mom went to Oregon, or whether she had reason to believe the kids were in danger. We just don’t know. To presume that one does know, on the basis of very sketchy and incomplete information, isn’t very smart. To go off and foam at the mouth and spew venom at a woman who for all we know did the best thing she knew how to in a very difficult situation…well, that’s just a bit off balance. To put it mildly.
So, we have an OP pitting a woman for leaving her children in the custody of people she had no choice but to leave them in the custody of? What the hell was she supposed to do? Kidnap them?

Say it ain’t so…jayjay is from Altoona? And you’re right, just about every place in west-central PA is more backwoods-like than Altoona. I always laugh when I drive out to see relatives in Clearfield County and see the signs on Route 219 which read “Ebensburg 56 miles.” 'Cause there’s nothing between there and Ebensburg worth stopping for.
SnoopyFan, that woman is the victim here. She fled to Oregon. Some of her children are dead. Her parents are dead. Her husband shot himself in the head.
How the fuck can you blame her for all of this? Yes, I know you’re a woman, but that does not give you free reign to bash all the other women in the world for not living up to your standards. Her life was complicated. Try reading the other fucking posts here about what it is like to be separated from your kids or parents at Christmas.
Life is hard! You’re not making it any easier with your bile and hatred! Jones had the ability to make decisions all by himself, a woman did not drive him to it. Sure, in some cases, women do stupid or horrible things, but this is a stretch, even for you.

It is meanspirited to attack a woman who just lost her sister, parents, and baby on the assumption that she should have done something differently to somehow prevent the murders – or should have been present to be murdered herself.
So why are you assuming it’s one reason and not the other? Since you’ve now admitted both are “equally possible,” it’s mighty odd that you’d pit the woman as if you know the reason for her actions. You don’t.
Since neither she nor Jones had custody of the kids, it now appears that the more reasonable of the two assumptions is that she wasn’t allowed around them – not that she is a totally heartless trollop who decided to abandon her kids over the holidays. But why give a woman in shock, grief, and mourning the benefit of the doubt, right?
It’s also equally possible that Peeler was in Oregon laying the ground work for a new life for her and her daughters with a continent between them and Jones. I’m going to wait for the Lifetime original movie to clear things up before I judge anyone but Jones.
And let me also point out that while the news reports indicate Peeler left Jones “before Christmas” and report that she was visiting a boyfriend in Oregon at the time of the incident (January 8), AFAICT they do not indicate when she went to Oregon, or what she did for Christmas. For all you know she may have been with her parents and kids.
I think it’s actually pretty likely that she was, since all the reports make it clear that the believed motive for Jones’ attack was jealousy over the trip. If someone’s going to get worked up into a murderous rage over something, I find it unlikely that they’ll wait for two weeks to act on it.
I have found over the years, SnoopyFan, that being a misogynist is not exclusive to men. As a matter of fact women can be nastier to other women than men ever can.
The articles say say that she was in a custody battle. They also say that her parents had custody. Somehow a custody battle involving ones parents doesn’t suggest pleasant relations with them. I don’t think its that big a mystery why she wasn’t with her kids. Yes it is possible she was alowed to be there. It is also possible she was with her kids for Christmas. We do not know. All we do know is what she has to go through right now has to be unimaginable pain that no one should go through. I think that perhaps our prayers, rather than our condemnation is more in order at this time.
I get the distinct impression that SnoopyFan doesn’t give a fuck about the facts. All she cares about is that a woman is punished for having sex, one way or the other.

Because for a thread that you claim isn’t about “our impressions”, that seems to be the only thing you’ve supplied thus far.
