It is quite clear from context that the use of “fundie” in political discussion refers to people with a theocratic agenda, not to ordinary religious believers who simply wish to live in peace according to their beliefs. To interpret (deserved) attacks upon the former with (malicious) attacks upon the latter is simply a pose of willful ignorance for the (dubious) benefit of the peanut gallery.

Is it not possible to be both leftist and religious? Or at the very least, spiritual? Democrat does not = godless. But it’s amazing how often fundamentalist = right wing splinter group.

And lest we forget, it would appear that an astounding number of wars were started (at least partially) due to one group’s attempt to impose their religious beliefs on another group. It doesn’t matter what kind of fundamentalism is involved; Christian, Muslim, Israeli, fundie is fundie. They’re not rational people.

I didn’t realize that peace meant that I had to walk in lockstep with you. Fundie may be short for fundamentalist just as homo is short for homosexual, but all manner of offense could be generated using the term homo in a given context, such as “Let’s round up all the homos and ship them to Haiti”. Can you point to an instance in which you have used “fundie” in a positive sense?

Well, if you have a problem with “fundie” as a term for the theocratic faction (as opposed to an entire body of religious believers), how about “Talibornagain”? That seems to be a good fit and a good play on words (if I do say so myself).
