Very sad, I always liked her. Bright actress.
Oh! That’s so sad.
Hmmm. I was born in 1962 and I’m only 43.
Sad news, though.
Yeah, I wondered how she could be born 2 years after me and be 1 year older than me.
But no matter her actual age, it’s still too young.
I’m stunned! seriously shocked. I loved her; she was always (or at least sometimes) credited as "Miss Wendie Jo Sperber, " like Miss Barbara Stanwyck. She was just absolutely perfect in that Beatles made-for-TV movie that Spielberg did early in his career.
That makes me really sad.
The movie was “I Wanna Hold Your Hand” and, if I recall correctly, was actually a Zemeckis film produced by Spielberg. She was in “1941,” though…I think.
How sad. I’ve had an autographed 8 x 10 of Wendie Jo on my bulletin board for many years, going back to when I wrote her a fan letter after I saw her in I Wanna Hold Your Hand (a theatrical movie, by the way). In what was already one of the funniest movies I’ve ever seen, hers was the standout performance as a frenzied Beatles fan who looked like a baby elephant in stretch pants. She had many roles after that, but none matching that giddy high.
About the age/birthdate confusion: Wendie Jo was actually born on September 15, 1959.
You and I both, Eve.
One of the things I love about the Dope is that I can say “Wendie Jo Sperber,” and people will know what I’m talking about. When I mention this to colleages, I’ll have to say, “Marty McFly’s sister.”
BTW, she was billed as “Miss Wendie Jo Sperber” only once, in the movie Used Cars (1980), also directed by Robert Zemeckis.
What a shame. She and Billy Bob Thornton as the Brooklyn wife/Arkansas husband odd couple were the only reason to watch Heart’s Afire, then they took her character off. I knew she’d had breast cancer (she was on an episode of Murphy Brown years and years ago in which all of the breast cancer patients were played by actors who’d had it [including Marcia Wallace, Gail Strickland and Tracy Nelson] had been diagnosed with cancer in real life) but I’d hoped she’d beaten it. At least she had several years during which surely there were healthy and happy times.
RIP Chicquita
So sad, and way too young. And sitting here by my computer is the reminder card I received today for my mammogram. I think maybe I won’t wait until January to make the appointment.
Who was the father of her children? No mention of him in the obit? Did he die before she did?
RIP. She was great.
She was a wonderful actress, and always stood out in everything she did.
That is sad, I always liked her. She was an excellent comedian and worked with Hanks in Bachelar Party also.
She was the only funny part of the “Private Benjamin” TV series.
But those who said it were right, the high point of her career was in **I Wanna Hold Your Hand. **

Yes, let us all laugh at the memory of her with her husband Stan in a headlock. “You said no hookers, Stan!!” [punch]
I know it wasn’t a great movie, but I was exactly the right age for it. I was 17 when it came out; I thought it was incredibly funny and witty.
She was hilarious doing physical comedy in it. Tom Hanks was just right for the role and Tawny Kittaen was gorgeous.

Oh, I’m right there with you, the only difference is that I DO think it is a great movie.
I love love love love that movie!!
I adored her in “I Wanna Hold Your Hand”.
I fondly remember her as one of the few plus-sized actresses on TV for a lot of my younger years. And one that was always funny, but never cruelly mocked.
I’ll miss her.

One of my favorite things from that movie has always been Wendie Jo’s character putting money into payphones (to call the radio station and answer Beatles trivia to win free tickets to the Ed Sullivan Show): she would slap whole handfuls of dimes at the coin slots with her mittened hands. And jumped out of a moving car on the freeway once to do it!
I also remember her fondly from Bosom Buddies.
I remember reading several years ago about her fight against cancer. It’s quite remarkable that she was able to survive for as many years as she did with stage IV disease. Unfortunately, breast cancer in young women often tends to be aggressive. How sad for her children.
She was apparently responsible for founding this charity which provides support to cancer patients: http://www.wespark.org if anyone wants to make a contribution in her memory.
