We're finally moving!

And the second apology was shortly followed by a warning against Tuckerfan. Same old same old. As far a houses go, the SDMB needs a thorough housecleaning, from Ed on down.

I’m set in my ways too. But now I have a vacation house. I’ll see how things go.

Is it on a beach?

I can bring food & drink.

John W. Shakespeare: Who?

:smack:

He posts informatively on Shakespeare and Elizabethan drama, among much else, hence the slip. I mean, of course, John W. Kennedy.

My apologies.

Just don’t bring pie. I fucking hate pie.

I’m trying out the new boards myself. I love this place, but I really can’t stand the direction Ed has been taking it. It’s hard to see so many of my favorite posters up and leave. Liberal is one of them. I don’t always agree with him, but I almost always find what he has to say worth paying attention to. Many of the people leaving are like that to me.

Liberal, may I humbly suggest you also give Giraffe’s board a try? If you are already never mind.

I confess to being totally befuddled by many of these people. The great huge horrible change is that (1) discussions about moderator actions need to be polite, and about the actions and reasons rather than about the moderators’ personalities; and (2) you can’t be vicious and abusive, tell people to “fuck off” or call them “cunts.”

I just have no understanding of why this is such an earth-shaking, life-revising, community-breaking deal to some people. Seems to me that the outrage is totally out of proportion to the stimulus. Are these folks seriously saying that they can’t have a conversation without using the word “cunt” or being threatening and abusive? Are they seriously saying they use that sort of lanugage in their everyday lives?

I’m tempted to go over to those boards and dump the sort of nasty, vicious, abusive language on them that has been dumped on me over the years, and let them see how much fun it is.

Just an observation: It’s not the new rules that are breaking the community, it’s how the powers that be handled the widespread feedback about them. I don’t see how this concept is so lost on so many, including you – you seem like a smart guy. Surely you can see how the tone of some moderators and administrators are putting people off. Can’t you?

No. And many, many of them have said so many, many times, and yet you keep trotting out the strawman. Seeing as how you habitually refuse to read entire threads and then jump to some sort of conclusion anyway, this should come as no surprise to anyone.

You are acting petty and small, while many of the posters here are attempting to be reasonable and come to some sort of an acceptable compromise or solution with Ed. Aren’t authority figures supposed to set some sort of example or something?

I thought trolling was against the rules even for Admins. Blatant misrepresentation of people’s posts is trolling.

Either you’re posting this shit without reading 90% of the posts explaining why people were upset or you’re lying about them, either of which makes your post classic trolling. (Or, I suppose, you’re too stupid to understand them, which hasn’t been my experience in previous encounters with you, but who knows? Perhaps you drank a quart of paint-thinner or something.)

The “The people who are upset only want to be able to call each other “cunt”” gimmick is so last week that it’s not funny. There are like 1000 posts on the topic and something on the order of 90% of them explain, in more or less detail, what the problem is.

Hell, ED gets why there’s a problem–go see his second apology. Go read what your boss wrote and please quit trolling.

Fenris, just waiting to be warned for being a “junior mod” for this post.

With all due respect, C K, the fact that you are so befuddled and confused is clear evidence that you have utterly missed the actual point. And that is precisely why many of us have given up here. You. Don’t. Listen.

never mind

Then you’re not paying attention.

First, by forbidding the Pitting of Moderators and Administrators, you are saying that you are beyond reproach no matter how capricious or ill-conceived your actions are. You are saying, ‘If you don’t like it, you can leave.’ Of course, Mods and Admins are free to Pit anyone they like; they just won’t abide being Pitted themselves.

Second, The Pit is not supposed to be a civil place. As I recall, it was set up specifically so that people would fire away with both barrels. If you don’t like certain words or usages thereof, don’t read The Pit.

And it’s not just the New Rules. This place has become less lively for a few years now because of the various policies that have been put in place, rescinded, and replaced with equally-stupid policies. No name-calling in GD? I can live with that. Civil discourse is better when people aren’t pissing on each other. But then, until now there has been The Pit to turn to. Even so, that rule did take some of the energy out of GD. Capricious bannings, and the refusal in most cases to allow banees to return even after a very long time, got rid of some very interesting posters. Pay-to-post drove others away. Ads drove away more. All the while people were suggesting ways to generate revenue that would not alienate Members. Instituting a five-minute wait between searches – even if no results were found – has been something people have complained about for a while.

It isn’t the New Rules in and of themselves that are pissing people off. It’s the condescending attitude of the Administration and certain Moderators that deliver the clear message ‘You peons don’t count.’ It’s built up over years. It’s been discussed. Suggestions have been made. Constructive criticism has been offered.

But you’re not listening.

Well, Dex, I’ve read enough of these threads the last couple of weeks, so maybe I can shed some light for you.
It’s not about a verboten word or about moving complaints to ATMB (something I suggested a couple of years ago, and was brushed off, IIRC). It’s about how you guys, and yes Dex, that includes you personally, have handled this whole brouhaha. People aren’t calling each other cunts or shouting fuck off all the time over at giraffeboards. That you would think that that’s their reason for leaving shows exactly where the problem is, here - you made up your mind beforehand and then simply cherry pick posts that confirm that oppinion, ignoring people who’re trying to be reasonable.

It’s Ed’s board has become a meme in it’s own right, and I don’t expect you to answer me publicly. But maybe you should ask yourself if you really want to be an admin to a boss who so regularly loses it and throws tantrums on a MB, even if it is his board.

Folks, don’t feed the troll. Dex isn’t an idiot–he’s just trolling to get a rise out of people.

Some people, Dex? It’s not some people, even accounting for board membership overlap and sock accounts it’s hundreds of people. It’s a very significant percentage of the people who have posted here for years. Are all of them not getting it or just you?

When you say Dex isn’t an idiot. You’re correct.

When you say he’s trolling, you apparently don’t know Dex. That would not be possible.

Knock yourself out. Maybe you’ll learn a thing or two.

With all due respect Sam, anyone can be a troll. I agree that I don’t know Dex any more–I used to really enjoy his posts, but either he’s an idiot (which I don’t believe) or he’s trolling–there really doesn’t seem to be a third option. Why else would he so obviously misrepresent the opinion of the other side in the most incendiary way possible? I can’t imagine he hasn’t read Ed’s second apology where Ed shows that he has some idea about what’s caused this level of anger among a number of posters…

What he’s doing is precisely the same as going into a thread about abortion and saying “I don’t understand why all you pro-abortion types are so eager to murder babies? Murdering babies is wrong and you guys keep going to court to make it ok for women to murder babies. Why do you hate babies?”

Blatant misrepresentation of your opponent’s* opinion is pretty much the definition of the “straw-man” style of trolling.
*and how sad that it does seem to be two groups who see each other as opponents now.
