Well, if she can’t control her emotions too well, you shouldn’t expect her to control her nipples…
I missed the first ten minutes of the show so I did not hear the opening music. Was it similar to the music at the end? That music was downbeat and seemed totally unrelated to a show about the future.
What was with the Vulcan at the beginning of the show raising his voice when a discussion was not going his way? Were Vulcans more emotional during this period of time? Or are humans a bad influence :)?
It is a fine line the creators of the series have to walk with making equipment less sophisticated than other series. If we streamline gadgets today, why wouldn’t we two hundred years in the future? I thought the phasers looked more bulky than they should. Of course that is just nitpicking. It will be interesting to see how the characters develop. They seem to have a very small core cast.
I pretty much liked it. By biggest complaint is the link to the “distant future”. Let’s just cut the time travel shit, ok? There’s no need for it.
And am I correct that this is the first showing of nipple erections in the Star Trek franchise? Daddy likes!
I liked it, but I thought the Vulcans were way too emotional. Either they need better actors or maybe being around humans drives pure Vulcans nutty.
I think they’re gonna have a time explaining how come there’s the “turtle head” Klingons in Enterprise, and the “smooth head” Klingons in TOS.
I think the show’s pretty cool, though.
About that Klingon-head thing, Paramount is already on record, both within the universe (happened in DS9) and in press releases that they’re not going to explain it. It was a troubled time in Klingon histgory and that’s all they’re likely to say, so don’t hold your breath until ridges form on your forehead 'cause it’s not going to happen.
It’s make up and money. TOS had poodles in party hats for aliens once. Get over it.
Despite some weaknesses, I thought the show was pretty good overall, even if Bakula (gaack!) is in it.
The Vulcans were far too emotional.
The decon scene was way overboard. The Vulcan woman is definitely sexy, but it’s well established that Vulcans don’t casually touch others, telepathy thing makes that unwise.
Likewise, I think nudity would not be a problem for them, especially in potentially health-threatening circumstances. If you need to decontaminate, you need to take off everything. It could have been done as a something perfectly casual for her – like the co-ed shower scenes in Robocop and Starship Troopers – but with a doubletake by him, and without making it gratuitous for the audience.
I liked the opening credit sequence but having a theme song with lyrics is quite a big departure from precedent.
The time travel business is a really bad omen for the future, so to speak. What are we gonna get next, a holodeck?
Bottom line, I’ll be back next week.
I wonder if the time travel has been introduced to enable contradictions with established continuity… after all, it the “past” has been changed then there is no such thing as anachronisms…
“Nudity is often seen, but never looked at.”
Also, you cannot expect the Klingons to explain an artifact of the recording treknology of Kirk’s time. For some reason Klingons appear different in those recordings. As it is Earther tech that made those records, it behooves the Earthers to explain the problem.
Don’t ask my opinion of the new series. It took me five seasons to accept TNG as a legitimate Trek. One of these days I will have to watch an episode of this Voyager thing…
DAMMIT!
My friend said he was going to tape it, but he only thought it was ONE HOUR. I missed the entire second half. Does anyone know if/when they will air it again? DAMN DAMN DAMN
Vulcans are not emotionless beings, they actually have very strong emotions that they are trained at an early age to supress. Different individuals would reasonably differ in how well they are able to suppress their emotions. Remember, Spock was an exceptional Vulcan, and was ashamed of his human side, so he put extra effort into emphasizing his Vulcan characteristics. It is implied in TOS and Voyager that Vulcans in Starfleet is a relatively rare thing, so we can reasonably assume that they would want to send their best examples of what Vulcans value most highly–repressed emotions and logical behavior. Hence Spock and Tuvok being very repressed. In fact, we know that Tuvok’s emotionless demeanor is a conscious choice on his part.
The “emotional” Vulcans don’t bother me at all. Having some variety makes more dramatic and logical sense to me.
Maybe the Vulcans were not very good at suppressing emotions until circa 2200 AD. A lot can happen to a species in 100 years, and if they’re pompous enough, by the time Spock hits the scene, the Vulcans might just claim that they could always do it.
Did you notice that the whole show was slightly letterboxed?
The background music and general feel were very very similar to a Voyager or late DS9 episode, I thought. I liked how this show was different - I wish it had been a little more different, though.
Is the Rigel in the show the real Rigel? I think it would be silly to call any planetary system Rigel other than the one around Beta Orionis. But why would Archer not have heard of it?
So Zephram Cochran not only originated the phrase “Star Trek”, but the opening speech. He’s becoming a pretty darn important guy.
Dr. Phlox is one keen dude. I hope he’s not just there for comic relief. Now I want an osmotic eel.
Maybe I’m missing something, but why was the episode called “Broken Bow”? Broken Bow is only seen once, before the opening credits, and mentioned once more.
I thought that the show was going to be called Star Trek: Enterprise, but it’s just Enterprise. That’s going to take some to which getting used.
My biggest complaint is that as far as premieres go, this really wasn’t all that epic of a story. Why didn’t earth or some alien civilization hang in the balance? They introduced the Temporal Cold War, which I guess is a big story, but it wasn’t really a big part of the episode. When the first season finale comes around, I want a big conflict.
Finally, I also wished there had been more character development outside the top three. I guess that can wait, though.
I didn’t have high hopes for it, but I thought it was pretty good.
I think they did a good job of depicting a period much earlier than the previous shows. I can’t really describe it, but it both had the same Star Trek vibe as all the other series’, but also didn’t feel like a carbon copy. People in the Next Generation, DS9 and Voyager all seemed too perfect at times (they’re all geniuses, have no hate or prejudice, etc.). These folks felt closer to people from our time: regular old flawed humans. The tension between the Humans and Vulcans was pretty cool. The various aliens were imaginative and interesting.
I could have done without the theme song (I expect to get tired of it pretty quickly), and have my doubts about the ‘temporal cold war’ stuff. I expect the mystery man that the head green bad guy was communicating through time with will turn out to be either a future Captain Archer (or his evil twin/clone/whatever) or a character from one of the previous Trek series’. I would have much preferred if they had completely avoided time travel stuff (they couldn’t resist in any of their other shows, and it’s doubly tempting to have some kind of connection between Enterprise and the other series’ time periods).
I’m a big Trek fan and general continuity nit-picker. They’re already playing fast and loose with some details of the ST universe, and I’m sure they’ll twist around a lot more as the seasons go by. But I’ll give it a chance to see how it grows.
Eric
I remember another one - from TNG - the episode w/ Tasha Yar’s sister from the ‘Rape Planet’. I think she was rather ‘nipply’ as well…
And on that note, it’s started already…
They didn’t “send” Spock, his family was against his joingn Star Fleet. I never saw anything t indicate that Tuvok was “sent” either. Indeed, he decided to leave and then rejoin Star Fleet.
These Vulcan guys were not Sarek material.
^:)^
It’s the United Federation of Planets that won’t be founded until 2161. Starfleet will be (is? was?) a Terran organization that later became the quasi-military of the UFP.

Nope. For this series, they’re burning the master videotapes after the initial airing. :D:D
Seriously, look for it this weekend. Most of the stations I’ve seen Star Trek on re-air the week’s episode sometime Saturday or Sunday.
