Whadya think of Enterprise: Broken Bow (spoilers)?

Do you mean Jeffrey Combs?

What does “netter” mean? Is it reticulated make-up?

Were the Andorians the ones with blue skin and antennae?

Depends how they revise it. As long as they’re still blue and have the antannae, it’s unlikely to draw Klingon level ire (I’ve never seen anyone complain about the Romulan ridges, for instance).

I managed to catch part of Enterprise again tonight. The Vulcan said that they do not touch their food with their hands, and so ate breadsticks with a knife and fork. It does not seem very logical to eat something in an inefficient manner. Is this a hygiene thing or a cultural thing? Has this habit been established in a previous series?

It is logical. Eating food with your hands is less sanitary than with sterilized utensils. I think it’s a cultural taboo derived from the hygenic aspect.

Who says the utensils are sterilized? They could be handled directly by the stewards before being used. Also if the food is being created by cooks, than it has also been handled directly.

I have head a number of opinions that parts of Enterprise where shot too dark. I did not find this at all. I have done a lot of 3d rendering and one mark of an amatuer work is to have an even brightly lit scene. Shadows add atmosphere and who says rarely used corriders should be brightly lit?

Forgive me if this has been mentioned already, but…

a lot of Star Trek difficulties can be resolved once you realize that TOS was just a show. I don’t mean this in the tiresome “don’t get all worked up over it, it’s just a show” sense. I mean that in the world of ST:Enterprise and the other non-TOS shows, ST:TOS is a television show from the 20th century. That’s why the Space Shuttle Enterprise is on the walls of all the future Enterprises. The show was popular, they named a Shuttle after the ship from the show, and a few centuries later they named the starship Enterprise after the one from the show. Maybe they even tried to make it look like the one from the show, a la Galaxy Quest. And that’s why the Klingons look different in TOS. They didn’t have good enough makeup technology to make humans look like real Klingons. How did the people working on the series know about Klingons at all? Well, remember the episode where that guy with the black cat travelled back to the 1960’s and met Terri Garr?

And why did Whorf say he didn’t want to talk about smooth-headed Klingons? He thought Klingons got short shrift in the show. After all, in TOS the Klingons were basically nasy, brutish, and tall. In ST:NG they have a tea ritual and battle poetry and whatnot.

Of course, you’re probably wondering about that ST:NG episode with Spock, right? Simple: obsessed fan.

  1. Yes.
  2. Sorry, my antennae got in my eye while typing “better”.
  3. Yes.

Hey Ben, who let you out of GD?

It sounds like what you’re suggesting is that the Star Trek phenomenon en toto is one big Möbius strip or Klein bottle. Interesting. C’mon over here, Ben, I’ve got a billy-club I want to introduce you to.

I missed something here. Would you please elaborate?

I think what he’s trying to say is that TOS and ST:E aren’t meant to be pre-history for ST:TNG. They exist in the history of TNG as entertainment tv shows made during the late 20th/early 21st, and the similarities betwen the fictional shows and the real world in ST:TNG are either coincidence or fannish mania.

I think.

Hey, it makes about as much sense as slash, so what the heck.

That’s ah, that’s extraordinary.

Dry cleaning is illogical…

There are of course exceptions, including those you mentioned. However, as a general rule, washing your hands does not sterilize them to the same degree that an industrial dishwasher and sanitizer will. Utensils are routinely sterilized in any industrial food preperation setting. I think it’s safe to assume that the galley of the flagship of Starfleet would be able to observe basic sanitary procedures.
