Our forecast is now upped to 18-24 with “dangerously” high winds and the same 3-4 inches per hour at its peak. We shall see.
The interesting thing to me is not that the school where I teach part time is already closed tomorrow; there have been occasional times in the past when they’ve announced a closing the night before. Thing is, the closing is usually announced about ten or eleven pm and after it has been snowing or icing for two or three hours minimum. This time they announced the closing at about two pm–while school was still in session today and at least ten hours before the first snowflakes are expected. Beautiful, dry, clear weather, and…closed tomorrow. I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything like it.
Here in Central Virginia they packed the grocery store today. I mean packed. Jammed up aisles at every register with twenty+ minute waits. All registers open. Hours and hours of snow grocery mania. Milk, eggs and beer emptied out faster than they could be refilled. Whole families gathered around full overflowing carts.
Earlier last weekend they were predicting 8 to 12 inches. Yesterday it was revised down to only 1 to 3 inches. High temperatures Tuesday are now forecast to be in the mid-forties. But this did not matter. The shelves were wiped out.
It snowed tonight for about an hour and then turned to rain. From the weather radar it looks like that’s all we are getting. Rain. Barely a hint of snow on the grass.
I have been in the grocery business for over thirty years and the snow craziness still amazes me. I think it must be something instinctual. My wife says I overthink it. She believes people just like to find something to get excited about. Maybe it is both.
If you don’t mind me asking, where are you and what is the annual rate? We pay $450 for having the driveway plowed all winter, which includes a certain number of sand/cinder spreads if it’s icy. On a particularly snowy winter we send extra as a tip since he keeps the rate the same.
If you have to buy some, my favorite is the Vanilla/Cinnamon Bailey’. It’s wunnerful!
The blizzard & 9-17" of snow turned into about 5" of the heaviest sleet I have ever shoveled. Roads are way too clear to snowshoe either.
Sorry about that!
Five inches of sleet sounds awful.
We are up to probably around 16-17 inches of actual snow. So I just went snowshoeing on your behalf. Walking north into the wind was a bit uncomfortable, but otherwise you had a very good time.
Thanks for snowshoeing for me but I got a couple miles of snowshoe running in on the rail-trail/bike path. From the tracks it’s evident a snowmobile was down there earlier. I started, & more importantly finished, at the brewpub.
Yeah, the return trip into the wind wasn’t fun but the hard packedness (is too a word) made for easy going.
Always, always…creeps (forecasters) Its always a big BIG thing with the news, we get dumped on we get a second or two of coverage but when its on the east coast, watch out! Days of blizzard coverage! :dubious::mad:
