I remember this anime from around the early to mid-ish 1980s, and I want to figure out the darn name of this, but I need help. All I have to go by are several scenes that I recall, so you anime buffs might have your work cut out for you in this here thread. So here we go…
-It seems to have had a “old-west” feel to it. The characters used revolvers and such, but it was set in a technologically advanced society. There were androids, and robots and stuff. And the revolvers didn’t used traditional ammo.
-I remember one of the main characters was a young kid…and his companion was an older female. However, I think this femal was a android…and the weirdest thing about this anime was when there was a question of whether or not someone was an android, or a female. I recall that certain characters would use xray-style vision to peer through the subjects clothes and flesh and be able to see the subjects skeletal structure. Kind of weird, but this was over 20years ago for me.
-Apparently, rust was very deadly to these androids/robots. In one particular scene the protaganists were at a western-style saloon and someone taught a bad android a lesson by pouring milk down its throat and it rusted to “death” right there in the saloon in broad daylight!
I remember other tidbits but these are what stick out the most. A guy at work is really into anime and he was stumped. If you get the answer I will applaud loudly!
'Fraid not. Silverhawks isn’t anime and no scenes like were described happened in it (yes I’ve sat through all the eps. Some of them are really bad. And I say this as a fan.)
Just to fourth, the film is definitely GALAXY EXPRESS 999, the 1980 film directed by Rin Taro, based on the manga by Leiji Matsumoto. There was also a TV series from '78 until '81 and a sequel film called ADIEU GALAXY EXPRESS 999.
The first 999 film was dubbed into English by New World Pictures and got a quick American theatrical release, a stint on HBO, and a home video release. In the '90s a different home video version was released by Viz.
The “milk will rust my insides!” scene features a cameo by Space Pirate Captain Harlock delivering an old fashioned beatdown on some machine-man barflies. In the New World version, a decision was made to give his character a fake John Wayne voice.
(yeah, I created an account just to post this. I’m a nerd.)
Thanks everyone for helping me. As soon as I saw a screenshot of the little boy with that brown hat I knew you all were right. Thanks a ton everyone for helping me out!
