My wife and I are quite a bit behind the times. We just setup our two laptops on a wireless network and it occurred to me that we could play some fun games against each other over the network.
I got an old copy of Hasbro’s Upwords and we were able to play it through the network very easily. This got me thinking.
What other fun games might my wife and I enjoy through the network? Board games would be great, but any kind of fun game would be nice.
Upwords let us use the same game disc to install on both computers, by the way. I assume this is the case with most products. I hope so, anyway.
No, that’s not really the case anymore. Most games now a days requires a full copy per machine.
But, thankfullly good games on PC can be really cheap, specially if you wait for sales.
Get ye to Steam (steampowered.com) and download the clients on each PC.
Some game recommendations:
Portal 2 Awesome fun puzzle game for two players (also includes an excellent single-player campaign that is fun, challenging, and funny/smart). You just missed a sale on this which had the game for like $9 (IIRC). $18 for two copies would have been a steal.
Trine and Trine 2. there is a free demo for both, I believe. It’s a fun puzzle/action platformer where up to 3 people can play together (you only need one copy for this one, as it supports two controllers on one machine). There’s three character to control, each with their own abilities, which you can use together to solve puzzles/defeat enemies.
Magicka - 2D action game where you control little wizards in a hilarious adventure that has you casting all sorts of spells that inevitably result in someone’s (not laways your enemies) death.
Peggle! Super addicting game play and supports a 2 player mode on the same machine. Me and my wife have lost entire days worth of time playing this.
Audio surf is fun music created game where your mp3’s dictate the layout of a 3D track and obstacles you need to avoid or powerups you need to collect. Supprots 2 players too.
The lastest Magic The Gathering game. Excellent port of the card game. Lots of fun to play single and multi-player.
Dirt 2 or 3 is probably the second game my wife has spent the most time playing with me (next to peggle). Its the racing game for everyone. Lots of fun tracks to play on and different game modes to play with.
Left 4 dead. It’s a straight up FPS, but veyr easy on the system requirements, and fun/adrenaline rush inducing. Don’t know if it would be her cup of tea, but it’s basically a survival game where you have to get from point a to point b while hordes of zombies try to eat you.
Family Feud was fun last time we played it with other family members.
Also, most classic board games have PC versions, though I don’t think many of them are available on Steam. you might want to try Amazon.
EDIT: Of course the playability fo some fo these games will depend on your laptops.
Save bets are: Magicka, peggle, audio surf, family feud, magic the gathering. the rest will depend on whether or not your GPU can handle the games.
With the Source engine games (Portal, left 4 dead, etc), you can play over the network with only one copy by putting Steam in offline mode, although you have to use some console commands. Of course that’s assuming both computers can run them!
