What are some of the bigger name films still not available on DVD?

Are they any? I recall a few years back there was a bunch.

Could a kind moderator please correct my idiotic mistake and place this in Cafe Society or General Questions- thanks!

Well If… hasn’t come out on DVD anywhere to my knowledge.

I found a real nice list of MIA DVDs here: DVD Journal “Missing In Action” List

Awesome list- just what I was looking for! Thanks Max & Bippy as well!

I came in to mention Kenneth Branagh’s Hamlet, though I see that it is on the DVD Journal list. I saw that movie eight years ago on VHS and have been impatiently awaiting it on DVD ever since.

The one my wife always complains about is the 1973 version of Miracle on 34th Street with Sebastion Cabot as Kris Kringle.

Raise the Red Lantern was on DVD, and then out of print again! It was next up on my Netflix queue and then completely disappeared without a trace.

Hmm. I’m not convinced by that DVD list. From the few I looked at:

  • Flash Gordon is available on DVD (link)
  • Hard Boiled is available in several editions on DVD (example link)
  • The Killer is available on DVD (link)
  • The Quatermass Experiment was released three years ago (link)

…and so on…

Now, some of these may be European region-coded, but since most players don’t care any more is that a problem?

Kenneth Branaugh’s Hamlet springs to my mind too.

Also, the Beatles film Let It Be.

I think Let It Be is one of the real biggies among missing DVDs. Supposedly they’re sitting on it now because of the Cirque de Soleil thing.

Blade Runner. The ‘Director’s Cut’ is out, but I want the original. Till then, I’ll just have to make do with the Criterion Laserdisc version. Damn you laser rot!!!

I’m sure that the list is slanted toward what’s available in the US. The page even notes that some DVDs are available in other countries; K2, for example, was released in Canada, but not in the States. And the page also lists quite a few that were released at one time, but then were withdrawn, such as Hard Boiled (specifically, the Criterion edition DVD) and Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie (which I actually own, yay me!). So, those probably aren’t what the OP was looking for, but there are quite a few on there that haven’t been released at all, ever.

“Most players don’t care any more”? I don’t know about that, my friend. Maybe in your neck of the woods. Some players can be modded, sure, but here in the States, it seems to be getting harder than ever to go multi-region without either buying special standalone hardware or making sketchy modifications to PC-based software DVD players.

I’m still waiting for the cinematic version of Pirates of Penzance with Kevin Kline, Angela Lansbury, etc. 'Til then I’ll have to make due with a filmed Broadway show.

Schindler’s List took 10 years to come out on DVD.

I would like to see Puzzle of a Downfall Child (Faye Dunaway), That Cold Day in the Park (Altman) Play it as it Lays, A Safe Place & Reflections of Murder (Tuesday Weld- big fan) and Deep End (Jane Asher).

Disney’s Song of the South.
