What are the avatars at the bottom of a thread? I’m thinking of the most common posters, but I don’t know.
Yes, just the 5 most common posters to that thread.
Which are the same thing as the 5 icons over to the right of the title on the New, Latest, or Unread pages. Or on any of the Category pages (ATMB, FQ, etc.).
You can click/tap on one of those icons to open that person’s pop-up. Which offers you a button to filter the thread to just their contributions, send them a message, etc. Same as clicking their avatar next to one of their posts.
On thread pages to the left of the 5 icons is a small panel that says [###] views [###] links [###] users. If you click the views area, it pops up a graph of recent activity in the thread. If you click the links area, it pops up a roster of cross-thread cites in the thread. And, relevant to your query, if you click the users area, it pops up an array of avatars representing every poster in the thread, from most frequent to least frequent.
On this thread with just 3 posts & posters all this isn’t obvious. But if you fiddle with it on a bigger thread with a lot of repeat posters and thread to thread cites, you’ll readily see how all this stuff works.
You’ll also notice that once the thread gets long enough, that thread statistics panel and the 5 avatars are duplicated: once at the bottom of the OP, and once at the bottom of the thread. So whichever end of the thread you’re looking at, you have access to that info.

The popup contains the most prolific posters in that thread sorted from most to least prolific. But it is limited to just the top 24 posters in the thread no matter how many more people have contributed.

I use this feature all the time in lengthy threads when I’m looking for a particular post by a particular person.
After I call up the poster avatar list and I click on the avatar of the person I’m searching for, there’s an option to “pin” just that person’s posts within the thread. It allows me to quickly search for a particular post they may have made.
I can also unhide any posts responding to that post so I can read for context.
I find it a very useful option!

There’re 9 so far. So this’ll be #10.
Well, with 10 posts the roster of users is up at the top. And suddenly appeared at the bottom.
The only slight problem is I didn’t check to see if the user roster was already up top before I added post #10. So it may have arrived earlier. But the bottom roster definitely was absent at 9 posts and present at 10.
