What are the stormiest waters in Britain?

I remember my history professor almost twenty years ago making reference to a body of water in or around Britain that was so stormy natives said God put it there to temper storms because otherwise the winds would tear the world apart. I can’t google up this saying.

Does anybody know what body of water she was referring to? I think it may have been the Hebrides but I don’t know if they’re sufficiently stormy. Is there any body of water in or touching any part of Britain (the Irish Channel, English Channel, whatever) that is known for particularly fierce storms?

Thanks for any info-
J

I think it would be recognised by most people that the Northern and Western Isles would be in the frame for the stormiest climate which presumably includes the sea. Below the article refers to Skye (Hebrides)

The Isles include the Hebrides, Orkneys and Shetlands.
I’ve never heard of your quote though.

The Corryvreckan maelstrom in the inner Hebrides is a rough spot that has plenty of tales and fables associated with it; see here
