People who drink and drive to their own deaths deserve no more pity than drunk drivers who kill other people.
Most people have no (or very little) ambition, intellectual curiosity, or critical thinking skills. Because of these people, many stupid laws are in place.
While I don’t want to defend the killings made in the name of socialism, is there any possibility of assigning accurate figures to this? I honestly don’t know, but purely in terms of the amount of time religious ideals have been in place and encouraged killing (crusades, inquisitions and so on) I’d be moderately surprised to see evidence that socialism has out-butchered it.
I can easily get more detailed figures for you, but believe me, the math checks out.
The crimes committed by religious wackos generally occurred at a time when the worlsd’s population was pretty low. The body counts from the Crusades were probably less than a million, from the Inquisition a few thousand.
Socialists of their various stripes committed their crimes in the twentieth century, in countries with nice big populations. The body counts are truly sickening.
Hitler was a socialist and a pagan. War casualties aside, you can lay 10 million deaths on him, mostly Jews, Gypsies, homosexuals and Slavs.
Stalin was a socialist and an atheist. Between engineered starvation and political purges, 20-30 million dead.
Mao was a socialist and atheist. Disastrous agriculture “reform” and liquidation of his enemies killed about 100 million Chinese.
The contribution of lesser socialist/communist monsters brings the body count up a little, including about 7 million in Cambodia alone. Pol Pot was, for the record, an atheist and socialist.

But I am not sure how “socialist” many of those regimes truly were. Totalitiarian is much more accurate. Their religion was the state and the party. The atheistic nature of those regimes was based on their complete intolerance of any completing structures or ideals which could run counter to their own goals.
The fact that pol pot, hitler and stalin was insane meglomaniacs also had a large amount to do with it as well.

Exactly, especially regarding Hitler. Just because he called himself a “National Socialist” doesn’t actually mean he was a socialist. Hell, I could call myself a Capitalist but it doesn’t make me one until I start acting like one.
Of course there is also the problem of definition. What is a socialist? There are about as many definitions as people that can say the word. For example, Socialism to me is not the staging ground between the revolution and true Communism, but it is to just about every American I have ever spoken to.
I was reacting to the question whether religion has killed more people than socialism. By that same token, I can claim that the Crusades and Inquisition weren’t really religiously motivated.
I’ll let the death tolls, and the expressed political philosophies of these movements, speak for themselves. You can claim that they’re not really socialists if you like.
We can respectively claim that all religious people are peaceful Sunday-school teachers, and all socialists are benevolent social workers. We would both be naive in thinking this.
Doctors are ordinary people. Sometimes, despite the best intentions in the world and every possible precaution, they make mistakes at work. Unfortunately, doctors’ mistakes can lead to people getting sick and/or dying. This is one aspect of becoming a doctor that scares s**t out of me.
If you are injured because you were dumped swimming at the beach, or if you have heart disease from eating too much fast food, or if you have a headache from the loud music at a rock concert, noone else is responsible. Maybe it was your fault, maybe it was an accident, but there is no reason on earth why any person or organisation should pay you millions of dollars to make you feel better about it.

- Stupid people ARE breeding faster than smart people (well-established, global statistical fucking correlation over here). However this really isnt important since genetics has almost nothing to do with how smart you get. Most of intelligence has to do with mental stimulation in the first few years of life and with the actual synapses in the brain, not the gross brain structure or even the brain cells themselves (except in the case of mental retardation, duh).
The number of synapses you have constantly changes in response to your needs. I.e: use it or lose it. This is why even though we all lose several hundred thousand brain cells a day after age 45 we can still keep getting smarter if we keep stimulating our intellects. More synapses will be formed in response to the demand.

Every sense that we have, in fact the way our minds work PERIOD is based around detecting difference. When you receive that raise or lottery winning you feel great for a while but soon you get used to it and it stops being special. So you are sad again. Ergo if you plan to use money to get happiness either you have to get ecstatically happy ever time you get the smallest penny or you NEVER really get happy. Serial shopping guys. The only way to stay healthy for as long as possible is to eat a high-nutrient/low-fat diet, not drink or smoke, not oversleep, stop drinking coffee and get lots of exercise. People who do this will naturally die but they will live longer, healthier and (most importantly) happier lives than the rest of us.
