Nah, him and I already did the doggie thang…
Hmmm … it DOES look intriguing. Anyone else have thoughts? Perhaps we could just meet in Jack London Square … or the old Standby, CHEVYS!!!
I beg you, no more meeting at the Embarcadero. Chevy’s, Unos, Whatever’s … I’m sick of them.
If I, as the guest of dis-honor, really have a say, I vote for somewhere dangerous where somebody might be found with an electric guitar playing it very loudly. I know not where, but that’s my wont. Or want. Whichever.
Yeah, I was looking to you to choose the destination. It seems only right.
zyzzyva has moved into a new apartment and is using dialup until his DSL gets turned on, and apparently, his IP range is banned, so he has asked me to let you fine BAD’s know that he is indeed interested in attending. He’ll keep his eye on this thread, but it would be best if someone emails him with details: zeppo@bigfoot.com.
Once we have some details to give him, we will certainly give him the scoop.
Would El Torito on Saturday night be amenable to everyone?
Which El Dorito? There’s only a few gazillion of them.
Come on, guys, can’t we go to a real Mexican restaurant, just for once? Please? Enough Chevy’s and El Torito. Think of Zyzzyva, too, I hate to see him watching us eat.
Whatever it is I’m supposed to do on the 8th has yet to occur to me, so I’ll be there. Wherever there is.
My heart’s not set on El Torito. What would be a better, and possibly more zyzzyva-friendly choice? I just thought of El Torito because it’s in Oakland, and we don’t want the guest of honor to have to hoof it too far.
Well, there are lots of restaurants in Oakland. It’s a pretty large city. I’d suggest something, but I don’t live there. I say let Jack pick a place he likes, and failing that, I’m sure Zenster has a thousand suggestions.
Hmm … Zenster? Can you give us some good Oakland-area options?
(Why do I feel like I’m calling upon Beetlejuice?)
For Mexican food in Oakland it’s hard to beat Mexacali Rose. They make an excellent pico de gallo (I stole their recipe), and even though they serve ground beef in their tacos, they’re still head and shoulders over El Dorito. The restaurant is close to the freeway, mass transit and BART. They have a full bar and I’m sure the guacamole would meet Z’s vegan requirements.

Another idea would be Yoshi’s Japanese Restaurant at Jack London Square. They have a good dinner and lunch menu that includes vegetarian items. (Come to think of it, they are d@mn pricey!) They will have live music on Saturday night but the food will be a lot pricier than Mexacali Rose and the live music show is by admission only. On Saturday the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio is playing, but admission is around $22.[sup]00[/sup], which can buy a pitcher or two of Margaritas over at Mexicali Rose. Plus, Yoshi’s is not open straight through the afternoon, so that pretty well shoots them out of the water.
Here is a list of activities happening in Oakland on Saturday. It looks like The Oasis will have some Latin Salsa playing at 3:00PM on Saturday. They are not far from Mexicali Rose so that’s a show we could retire to after dining on Mexican food (see? a theme!)

We could also try dim sum at Canton Restaurant. They do a pretty fair job and again, I’m sure they’d whup up some unadorned veggies for Z. Snooooopy and his Battyness have both tried dim sum before and managed to keep it down.

Actually, I was thinking of The Jade Villa for dim sum. I have been there several times and their hom sai gok are very good.
Here is a quick review of several restaurants in the same area. As you can see, there are lots of options.
**Le Cheval **
Popular although not incredibly good Vietnamese restaurant. Mostly famous for its “Seven Courses of Beef” dinner. Relatively crowded, so reservations are usually needed for parties of more than four or six.

1007 Clay Street, Oakland
Inexpensive.
**Jade Villa **
Large dim sum restaurant at the edge of Chinatown. Food is good, and it can handle large parties relatively easily. Very popular for weekend brunches.

800 Broadway, Oakland
Inexpensive.
**Mexicali Rose **
Average Americanized Mexican food, primarily notable for being until 3am. It’s been around for a long time, so it’s kind of a local late-night hangout. Also, Jerry Brown frequently claims that it’s his favorite restaurant, and although it’s near where he lives, he’s seen more frequently at Soizic, no surprise there. Good margaritas.

So, there’s a huge list of possibilities. People, please check in and let’s make a decision. I’m up for dim sum or Mexican, so anything goes!
I love Dim Sum.
Yum yum.
It all sounds fine to me. What say you, Jack? Or have you found your guitar haven?
Jack, I’ll buy you all the pork sno-balls you want!
