I made a list of all my favorite love songs that didn’t involve breaking up, unrequited love, or loving so much it hurt. It was still pretty long, so I weeded out all the ones with even a modest twinge of longing, as that adds a bit too much poignancy to really be considered a happy love song (even if they weren’t sad either). That left me with just a few:
And speaking of John Prine… “Unlonely”. (John Prine is not the first person who comes to mind when you think “happy love songs”… but there’s something endearing about this rather grumpy and sardonic guy doing a love song.)
Happy Together! I just love the Turtles, they had a lot of great songs.
This Will Be. An everlasting love, so sweet and optimistic.
At Last by Etta James - maybe not happy, it’s beyond happy into, well, ecstasy.
We’ll Sing In The Sunshine - hey, it’s really happy if you don’t pay close attention to the words!
*I believe in memories
They look so, so pretty when I sleep
Hey now, and when I wake up,
You look so pretty sleeping next to me
But there is not enough time,
And there is no, no song I could sing
And there is no, combination of words I could say
But I will still tell you one thing
We’re better together. *
You are lovely tonight
You, dear, will guide me into the morning light
You are lovely tonight
Lay here beside me - I see the rest of my life with you
Marc Broussard Where You Are
*
Your skin is like the moonlight
Dancing in the midnight
Your touch is sweet as candy
Your kisses they taste so fine, so fine
and I want to love you better
You don’t have to be alone
I want to let you know forever’s waiting right here at home*
When I hold her in my arms,
You know she sets my soul on fire.
Oooh, when my baby kisses me,
My heart becomes filled with desire.
When she wraps her lovin’ arms around me,
About drives me out of my mind.
Yeah, when my baby kisses me,
Chills run up and down my spine.
