What are your favorite SDMB expressions?

I must be in the minority, because I like most of the SDMB expressions. I only get “annoyed” with certain expressions that are overused by single posters (ie, no one else uses them), but it’s more that I find them very much not funny and wonder why that poster keeps using it over and over and over…

Anyway, my favorite is “butthurt”. It just conveys the perfect sense of someone being upset over the stupidest thing. And it seems to apply to sooooo much that goes on around here.

Terrific idea for a counter-thread. I’ll have to go looking for my faves, though. I know I have some but they aren’t springing to mind at the moment.

Good luck on this thread!

Ahhh, they’re 1920’s-Style “Death Rays”.
I burning your dog!

I also like lots of other memes but those are the SDMB ones that come to mind that I like.

Butthurt isn’t an SDMB expression. That said, if it were, it’d totally be my favorite as I use it routinely in real life conversations.

Lets go down to the quarry and throw stuff down there.

I think it’s funny.

“Woo-hoo! I’m masturbating like a motherfuck!”

Don’t think anything will top that in randomness, anyway.

I’ve always like the riffs on established one liners. “Flapper zappers” is my personal favourite.

I’m not sure if this is an SDMB thing or originated somewhere else, but there truly are some things that can only be dealt with by nuking them from space.

Like John Mace, I don’t get annoyed by these little catchphrases as much as I just start ignoring them when they get old. My eyes just skip over them and on to the next bit of valid information.

The first few times I encountered the strikethrough and “fixed that for you” or the similar “you misspelled _____” I had a good laugh. Doubt that was a pure SDMB thing of origin, but it’s one/two I would add to a list. Like most such things, the novelty wears off pretty soon and it becomes something to ignore or bypass.

I can honestly not think of a single thing like that that lasts in its effects, but I reread the “I burning your dog” thread every so often because of its utter brilliance. Your basic meltdown and trainwreck.

What I like about the current use of “–like a motherfuck!”, “burning your dog!” and “deathrays” is that they don’t show up all that often anymore, and those that do use it tend to find rather clever and funny uses of it. They remain jokes. “Penis ensues” and “twenty minutes in 1960” also usually fall into the category of ‘casually tossed into the thread as part of a clever reply’.

The damn quarry thing, and now the woman handing out swords…they are so damn forced and non-sequitorial (is that a word?) that they are annoying not because the premise isn’t funny, but because they aren’t actually being used as jokes. They are just shoehorned into a thread and left to sit there, and it’s stupid.

Though I think my favourite SDMB is the hopeful-pregnancy Stick! Stick! Stick! because I like to believe that it works! Stay sticky, any proto-Dopers out there

“I’ll be in my bunk” always gives me a chuckle…

  1. Hi Opal.

I hate to rain on any parades but: fixed that for ya and cross out originated elsewhere. Nuke it from orbit is from Aliens and I’ll be in my bunk is Firefly.

One SDMBism that I find so useful it has crept into my every day language is the use of the “The Pit” to mean I’m about to curse your ass out. As in, “You wanna take this to The Pit motherfucker?”

The great and almighty OG.

OG as a replacement for an invocation of deity is almost certainly an invention of this board.
As so, I nominate it is the coolest ‘catchphrase’.

Though, honestly, in normal speech Americans typically do use some intensifier to a phrase, and use (again, typically) “by God” at times. The fact that we can replace that by ‘Og’ to demonstrate our nonadherence to theist principles is rather amazing.

Who first came up with ‘Og’?
Was it the Og Blessed ‘Cecil Adams’?

ETA: or is it just zero grams?

I thought the quarry one was mildly funny, then kinda dumb, and then, when everyone got mad about it, hilarious.

Also, “I burning your dog” is a wonderful thread.

It was a troll who repeatedly misspelled “God” as 'Og". I don’t remember enough details to search for his Pit threads.
Wait, wait. . . it was Son Og God, I beleive.

Yeah, I figured the orbit-nuking thing came from somewhere else, but here is where I first heard it (and the only place I hear it), so I’ll keep it on the list.

My favorite now is absolutely “let’s go to the quarry and throw stuff down there!”

I’m not sure if it’s original to the SDMB, but “I, for one, welcome our new feline overlords” has become a far-to-regular part of my everyday conversation.
