What are your favorite songs that begin with the letter J? See rules in OP [final poll added]

I often add a novelty song I really like when i cant find 5, even tho i would cheerfully admit it is hardly one of the greatest songs. So, yeah, I like the song, but yeah it is filler, since i dont expect many votes for it.

Nope, that’s actually up there available for votes.

Seconded.

Some of the songs I’ve picked are available in completely different versions by the same artist. I’d like to recommend the best ones to you.

Well, the polls ask for our favorite songs that begin with that letter.

“Favorites” are things you like better than all the others. I often find it really hard to pick a favorite something, because that implies ranking a potentially huge number of possibilities. But I’ve always only named songs I actually like, that could conceivably be my favorites if the competition were weak enough; and when I’m limited to five I try to pick the five songs, starting with the letter, that I like best out of all that have not yet been named, but without straining my brain too hard—if you asked me again later I might not pick the same five.

I’ve never been disappointed by a Tom Waits song, so I voted for that one even though I’ve never heard it. (I’ll check it out now).

I get that this is frowned upon, as it should be. I employed this approach only this one time, and don’t plan on doing it again. For me, Waits is the only musician for whom, statistically, this is valid.

Anyway, if there’s an artist like that for you, that should shave four minutes off your task!

This brings up an interesting side discussion (perhaps for its own thread): which artists do you “trust” this much?

My personal top tier artists are the Beatles, Neil Young, Dylan, Elvis Costello, and Paul Simon. And I can name songs from each of them that I dislike.

Are there artists that I don’t hold in as high regard as these whose entire catalogue I can say I admire? I dunno. Steely Dan, Talking Heads, and Richard Thompson come to mind as possibilities.

mmm

Thanx. I spent those 4 minutes scratching the face of the old dog. (She had some stitches, and is wearing an inflatable donut around her neck.)

The one criteria I have for my “list” I use to make my nominations is that every song on it has to be a song I’ll turn up the volume on if it comes on while I’m driving. To me, that qualifies as a favorite.

When it comes to voting, I won’t vote for any song I can’t “hear” in my head when I look at the title (and enjoy that in my head). If I can’t find 10 (or 9) in a poll that I can “hear”, I will look at artists I like and go to YouTube and give them a listen. I did that with Jack the Ripper in this thread.

I definitely think it helps if people add links in their list, which cuts out a step or two if I want to check out a song.

Are you asking which of the artists we like, where we’d trust everything they release, sound unheard?

MOst of them, I’d say. Of the artists I love, the only ones I don’t trust like that are New Order, Depeche Mode and The Pet Shop Boys, all of whom have released things I really didn’t like.

But of new artists (which is who I’ve been nominating in these threads) , so far I’m finding if I like someone, it so happens I like all their stuff.

Wait, no, that’s not true - I love a few tracks by Yeule beyond measure, and yet am really turned off by about a third of their output. Too glitchy for my taste.

I like Dolly but I hate Jolene. I mean, why on earth did that woman in the song pick some weak ass man, ands why does she still want that loser?

This seems to be tutor vs. students, Chuck Berry vs. the Stones.

I think it’s amusing that anyone might think to steal a man from Dolly. Good song though.
Possibly a better one is Here You Come Again.

I’m surprised at how poorly The Joker is doing in the finals.

Obviously, no one else will be surprised by it, with the exception, perhaps, of TRC4941.

Apparently a lot of people can accept and understand the scenario. I certainly can – within the confines of a song lyric (simplified characters, motivations, and usually tailored to rhyme and scan).

Everybody is weak ass (imperfect) about some things. Humans couples are never perfect matches – physically or intellectually. Couple-wise, people take what they can get and tolerate, rather than wait endlessly for their platonic ideal of a mate. And if Jolene can present as the guy’s platonic ideal, it makes for a decent song lyric.

Most men are biologically programmed to be drawn to multiple mates (it makes some evolutionary sense). The urge can usually be controlled, but if a relationship is already strained, the urge might well win over societal mores and intellectual discipline. It’s evolutionary sense (once again) that the human mind does not invariably win arguments with the reproductive organs.

And…now you are ready for that paean to long term relationships - To Daddy

I’m actually a little scared to listen. :face_with_peeking_eye:

If you summon up the courage, you need to listen all the way to the end. :sunglasses:

Nice song. Seems rural or small town oriented, which fits with Dolly’s image.

I had a rough time leaving it out, but which of my other three would I have left out?
