Well the 8 month year old has to go as some kind of an animal. Those are by far the easiest. You can find old pajamas that look like tiger stripes and you can paint whiskers on him.
Won’t a three year old have some idea, like a princess or something. A witch is fairly easy to do, but I don’t know if little girls like being witches.
Two year ago was the last time in costume.
The kid went out as Pink Lady from Grease and I was Al Bundy. I had my Polk HS jacket with a 33 on it and carried a NO MAAM sign… None of the kids understood. Many of the candy dispensers lent themselves to my fat woman jokes.
20-month-old will be going as a butterfly. I wanted her to go as an animal she can recognize and say, and I found some gorgeous wings on Etsy. Pair those with a black turtleneck and leggings and we’re set. I can’t wait for her to say “Buff-fly!” when she sees the wings.
Well, sort of. If I said to her, “what do you want to be for Halloween?” she’d have no clue what I meant. But if I asked her, “Do you want to be a witch or a ladybug?” she’d have an opinion. So I need to come up with some options to give her.
As for the princess thing–she hasn’t shown any interest in it, and I’m not going to encourage it while I don’t have to since I’m personally not really fond of it. If she someday independently decides she likes the whole princess/fairy thing, then I’ll indulge her. But until then I’ll go with other options. Last year she was the only little girl in her preschool class who wasn’t a princess or a fairy (she went as a pirate, and loved it).
So far she really likes the Sesame Street gang, especially Elmo, but that could be an expensive outfit…
I kind of like the idea of dressing her up in one of Lady Gaga’s getups, but some might consider that child abuse.
I’m also trying to brainstorm ideas of how to dress the two as a pair…
My girls have sometimes gone as a pair. Butterflies when they were little, then cat and mouse, Robin Hood and Maid Marian, Harry and Hermione, and this year: Bollywood stars.
My 3 year old daughter loves all thing princess-y, so she wants to go as a Disney princess; I think she is leaning toward Cinderella. My 5 year old son wants to be Luke Skywalker (because he really wants a light saber).
My 5 year old can’t decide whether she wants to be a witch or a pumpkin, so she’s leaning towards being a witch with a teeny pumpkin glued to the tip of her hat (her idea)! Maybe we’ll work in a few more pumpkins somewhere in the outfit, like on her shoes or belt.
I don’t know if the 17 year old is dressing up this year or not. Last I heard, he and two friends were thinking of dressing en masse as three different Doctors (from Doctor Who).
My five year old is going as Batman and my three year old is Wonder Woman. They’re both crazy for superheroes right now. I have to say, the Wonder Woman costume is unbelievably cute.
After my kids kept coming up with increasingly intricate and expensive costume ideas, I finally just took them to a costume shop and let them each pick something out. The youngest is going to be a police officer and the oldest is going to be a ninja (ages 4 & 7).
Last year, they were a pirate and a dog (brown turtleneck, brown pants, homemade ears & tail, painted on face). The year before, they were a bunny (footie pajamas, homemade ears & tail, painted on face) and a race car driver. The year before that, my youngest was a gnome, which was my favorite. Here’s a picture.
My three year old wants to be a witch, but keeps going back and forth on what kind. Goth, silly, traditional…Every witch costume she sees is the kind she wants to be.
My ten year old hasn’t decided yet, but I think he’s leaning toward being some kind of ghoul.
Agreed! Seriously considering it…I’ve already found thisoutfit for my baby, but it’s a bit on the expensive side. I don’t know…it’s cute enough I just might have to splurge.
Although my three year old is familiar with a lot of the popular character costumes and he doesn’t mind dressing up, he hates dressing up or wearing clothes that he percieves as different or strange for more than 10 minutes. He will run around in a pirate outfit whoopin’ and hollerin’ for a while until he yells “Take it off, I want to put on my normal clothes!” This year he wants a glow in the dark t-shirt to match his flashing spider necklace that he had last year. He is also a big glowstick and flashlight fan.
