I believe that for many people, depression can be beat by learning and applying better coping techniques and more productive world
views. I fully believe that drugs do help many people, but mostly because they can help people get to the point where that essential mental work can be done, and if it is not done, the depression will keep coming back periodically.
I believe that it will never be efficient to commute the way that we do, and that the price of individual transit is only going to rise and rise. People who do not factor this in to their housing decisions are idiots with only themselves to blame, and cities that do not plan for this are looking at disaster. If we do not plan for mass transit and transit-friendly cities now, we are going to be in bad shape in the coming years. It will be a painful transition.
I believe that having children is one of the most fundamental human rights out there, one that predates any nation or even civilization itself. I believe basically everyone should have as many or as few children as they desire whenever they like, and nobody has any right to judge them for it. Furthermore, nobody in America is “too poor to have children.” Hunter-gathers who actually own nothing have children and it’s fine. If they have a loving and safe home, a child can handle anything America has to throw at them.
I believe that class in American is huge, and largely undiscussed. We’ve just started having discussions about “the 1%,” but really there is relevant stuff here about all the little class divisions that make up our society.

I never understood the rules of football (American football), so I find it boring too.
I can sort of understand why people find sports exciting, but I don’t understand full-blown obsessions with certain sports or sports teams.

As a Catholic, I automatically discount their teachings 100% re: sex and marriage as, order to be an “official” member of the Church (i.e., clergy), you must give up sex and marriage. Taking advice from the Church re: procreation is akin to asking a tone-deaf person their opinion on your piano playing. Sorry Weeping Wyvern.

I don’t know if it’s unpopular, but I’m so, so glad to not have had a son. It seems to me, looking at my daughter’s travels through school, that the really fucked up and/or anti-social kids always are boys. Not saying girls can’t be fucked up or whatever, but they seem far more quiet about it. I also think I would have been a less effective father with a boy - far more harsh and unforgiving.
Suicide is an absolute, inalienable right - as long as the person has the mental capacity to understand death at least as well as does a normal 12 yr old, they have the competence to form a legally valid decision. Those unable to bring about their own deaths should have a health care worker come to them and give a barbiturate IV which would produce death i less than a minute.
I seem to have stumbled onto a common analgesic + hypnotic which has a long-lasting, much stronger that anticipated effect (my Doc. would not knowingly given me such a combination without telling me, and the druggist who fills them constantly lectures me not to mix the benzos - but has never said a word about these 2).
Will try a different combo tonight.
Homeschooling should be illegal. It allows underqualified parents to make lopsided or inadequate “curriculums,” fill their kids’ heads with extremist nonsense without any moderating outside perspectives, and get away with abuse more easily. Yes, obviously not all families are like this, but the risks are too great. The Germans have the right idea by banning it.
