What celebrities are homosexual, but are often thought not to be?

Ain’t the same on a “small screen”, is it???

This is perhaps a hijack, but anybody know the truth about Michael Stipe? Which way does he lean? I know that, for many years, he was rumored to be gay and while never exactly denying it, he’s always talked around the issue and never made a clear statement one way or the other. Then, I recall reading in the New York Post (not always the most reliable source of info) that he’d admitted having a longtime boyfriend. Don’t have a cite though. Can anybody confirm or refute this?

How about the other way around – people who are assumed to be gay, but aren’t?

There are three public radio hosts – Scott Simon (N.P.R.'s “Weekend Edition Saturday”), Terry Gross (N.P.R.'s “Fresh Air”), and Ira Glass (P.R.I’s “This American Life”) – who are often assumed to be gay – in fact, Terry Gross tells a funny story about it – but all three are straight.

If we’re including bisexuals, I’d say Kurt Cobain. He actually came out as bi. Tell this to most of his fans, and they just tell you he was trying to shock people.

I figure that if someone’s out as something, that ought to be accepted unless there’s a damn good reason to think otherwise. Why is it “innocent until proven queer?” And if it isn’t “innocent until proven queer,” why aren’t we taking signed confessions?

I’m a fan of his music, and I think there is a certain queer sensibility to it. Nor is every queer person in music doing electronica-pop.

I myself had heard that he’d officially came out[sup]*[/sup] a few years back.

Here are some cites, though:

[sup]This is no way related to the story of the time that I called him a cocksucker to his face[/sup]

A search on google does not bring up the article, but it does seem to bring up the fact that it does exist and that Michael Stipe is bi.
Re: straight people assumed to be gay:
Working from stereotypes only:), Richard “Simmons” Milton appears to be gay, but he beat up a guy who was bugging him about a year ago, so he is definitrly straight.

I typed that in wrong. Richard Simmons’s real name is Milton Simmons. :smack:

Where did Cobain come out as bi? In the Advocate interview, he said he could have been bi. He did say he wished he was gay, “to piss off homophobes”. But he claimed more than once that he was heterosexual.

The repeated line in ‘Negative Creep’ – “Daddy’s little girl ain’t a girl no more” doesn’t sound to me like gender confusion – it sounds like he was trying to piss off his homophobic father, with whom he had major problems.

Well, he never says he’s heterosexual. He says he’s more attracted to women than to men. I’ve heard the same thing from bisexual friends. But he also says, "If I wouldn’t have found Courtney, I probably would have carried on with a bisexual lifestyle. "

That sounds like a coming-out, to my ears.

IIRC, he claimed to be heterosexual in his journals, not in the Advocate interview. My post wasn’t clear on that.

Your interpretation may be right – I can’t claim to know what he was thinking. But if someone doesn’t feel safe telling it like it is to the Advocate, they’re either very conflicted, or just posing.

Wait - Rula Lenska is a celebrity?

I only found out recently that one of my favorite writers, Douglas Coupland, is gay. (In fact, he just came out recently – though why a gay writer nowadays would be in the closet in the first place baffles me.)

It was an open secret for years, though – like Rosy, or Ellen, etc. I first found out about five years ago.

I think he may have come out late, though, to himself. I sometimes think that “Bug Barbecue” (the one who didn’t figure until he was gay until he was 30) is a bit of an autobiographical character

Kurt Cobain speaks for himself.

This is pretty much proof positive that he is gay. Have you ever heard a celebrity waffle on the issue of his/her sexuality and then later be confirmed as 100% straight? It’s a sad fact that straight celebrities, even those who don’t like to air their relationships or are very sympathetic to homosexuals in Hollywood, have no reason not to just say “I’m straight” when being harassed by rumours and media attention.

You know, Cat Fight, I DID post two links that confirm your thoughts.

Michael Stipe speaks for himself:

Interview with Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant in The Independent:

Jorja Fox? Mrrrrowr.

Graham Chapman? Maybe he was secretly checking out the Black Knight or Tim the Enchanter?

I knew that Portia de Rossi was dating Ellen Degeneres, but Kevin Spacey and David Hyde Pierce are completely new ones for me. Whoa.

Jorja Fox? Cite please. Don’t get me wrong, I’d love it if she were a fellow member of the Dark Side, it’s just that this rumor is news to me.

I don’t have a cite, but a site:

It was mentioned earlier in this discussion. She is on it.
