What childhood food did/do you like?

Beanie-weenies. Still ok.

Fluffer-nutters. Too sweet. I did catch the 7 yo double-dipping out of the fluff jar the other day.

Okay, NOW I have an irresistable urge to go get a 7-11 slurpie!!! I hope 7-11 carries Nilla wafers.

When I was pregnant with WhyKid (circa 1992), I had the worst cravings for a Cherry Slurpee. Nope, Icee wouldn’t do it - the texture’s completely different. Looked in approximately 103 7-11’s. No one had Cherry. Blue Raspberry, Pina Colada, Watermelon (close, but no cigar), Banana (ugh.)…no Cherry. Evidently they pulled it in favor of the trendy varieties.

Thankfully, some years later they brought it back, only now it’s called “Wild Cherry”, and it doesn’t taste quite like I remember it.

Approx 103 …

I thought of another childhood food I loved: that coconut pudding in the Swanson mexican TV dinners!!! My mom wasn’t a good cook. I’ve looked for it, but I think Swanson replaced it with a brownie. Those schmucks.

I can’t believe I spelled slurpee wrong.

We always got the store brand of rice crisps, corn flakes, oat rings, etc. As well as bags of rice puffs and wheat puffs.

Well, one day my godmother and family were moving and for whatever reason they gave us their stash (five kids, quite a stash) of sugared cereals. Boy did my brother and I have fun that week or two. We’d dive for the prizes which the store brands didn’t have and then buzz up on the cereal. It had to be 25 years ago and I remember it like it was yesterday!

Magic Shell ice cream topping. You know what I’m talking about. It’s the chocolate syrup that hardens when poured on ice cream. Full of highly saturated tropical oils, utterly decadent.

Danish-go-rounds and Shake-a-Pudding.

Now that is the stuff of nightmares.

Spam. Yes, Spam – the Hormel meat product that’s good fried with eggs, fried in a sandwich (with slices of Velveeta cheese product, if you please!) I was one of the few guys in my Army outfit who loved the Spam in our C-rations. Damn, I love Spam! Can’t eat it any more, though – cholesterol, salt, fat, all that. But if I ever live to be 80, I’m gonna’ live on Spam, Cheetos, Coke Classic and those cookies that are crispy pockets with peanut butter filling in them. Oh, yeah, and whole milk.

But gotta’ have the Spam.
