What comic-book movie adaptations would you like to see?

Over on one of my favorite movie websites (and no, it’s not MoviePoopShoot.com), they’re discussing script reviews of the upcoming Daredevil and Wonder Woman movies and it got me to thinkin’ –

What comic books would you like to see made into movies? There are a ton of them in talks or in production after the success of Blade - Iron Fist, The Hulk, Ghost Rider, et cetera, ad nauseam.

Me, I’m really looking forward to Iron Fist, especially if Ray Park plays the title role. I would love to see a Heroes for Hire movie made, or a solo Wolverine flick (I think Hugh Jackman’s got more than enough charisma to pull off his own movie).

So what comic book titles do you want to see made into movies – and what actors would you like to see star in them?

This is assuming I want to see another comic book movie interpretation…

Anyways, I’d like to see Johnny The Homicidal Maniac in comic form. Pure genius, that comic.

The first thing that came to mind was Green Lantern. I’ve only read a few of the comic books in that title, but I always thought he was an intriguing superhero.

I’m not a regular comic book reader, but I do own a number of graphic novels.

I would love to see an adaptation of Watchmen, the excellent graphic novel. I’ve heard rumors that there have been various attempts at authoring a screenplay of it, but apparently it’s gone nowhere.

V for Vendetta, although somewhat dated, would still make a nice dystopian vision if it was brought up to date a little.

I’m a big fan of The Sandman series, but I seriously doubt any of them will be made into movies. Too complex.

I’d like to see The Silver Surfer made into a movie if they were willing to do it right.

Assuming you’re talking about superhero comics, none. I haven’t seen a good one yet, and I don’t even know if it’s possible. The only thing I can think of that seems remotely possible is The Watchmen, because in that world the idea of people wearing costumes and fighting crime is SUPPOSED to be silly. But anyone thinks Watchmen could be condensed into two hours is a fool.

Me, I’d love to see a full legnth, fully animated, theatrical release of a Superboy and the Legion of Super-Heroes story.

Specifically, I want 'em to do the Mordru story from Adventure #369-370(?), but add a few characters and make it the first meeting of Superboy and the Legion.

In other words: Shadow Lass accidentally opens Mordru’s vault. Mordru breaks loose and begins ripping up the Legion HQ and mind-controlling the other Legionaires. Shady, Valor (“Mon-El” is too hard to explain), Duo Damsel, Chameleon Boy and maybe one other character…Saturn Girl? escape into the past to regroup and plan.

They run into Superboy, introductions happen, but otherwise things continue pretty much as written, except that in addition to the faceless goons who take over Smallville, we also have mind-controlled Legion members.

They could even work in Lana Lang: Insect Queen!

As long as I’m dreaming, I’d like Miyazaki(Totoro, Princess Mononoke, etc) to do the design and animation, and Paul Dini / Ty Templeton to direct and put Paul Levitz in some sort of oversight role.

Sigh…it’ll never happen though.

And, um Legomancer? You do know that Terry Gilliam (Time Bandits, Baron Munchhousen, etc) and Alan Moore (Watchmen) were working on a movie deal back in the mid-to-late '80s? A script was even done (although I believe Gilliam was gone by that point) by Samm (Batman: The Movie) Hamm that I’ve read and it was decent (except for some major problems with the very, very end). I wouldn’t describe any of those folks as “fools”!

Atreyu:

I recently saw Neil Gaiman speak about the various movie projects based on his works, and his comments regarding the various Sandman scripts were painful.

Apparently, the latest script had Morpheus traped in some sort of electromagnetic device in a basement in New York. When the power failed, he was freed, and his brother Loki came to help him out. They then went looking for their other brother Lucifer.

Morpheus’ first line in this script was along these lines:

“Foolish mortal! You think your puny weapons can affect me, Morpheus, Lord of Dreams?”

Needless to say, Gaiman was not impressed. He said the script went downhill from there.
I’d like to see a film adaptation of the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. Victorian superheroes from classic literature – very fun.

Actually, Schadenfreude, there IS a movie version of The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen in the works. Check out this link:

For the most part I think comic books are more suitable for animated features. Wonder Woman would be kicking some butt if she were animated by the folks who do the latest Batman/Superman cartoon.
But that said I’d like to see Spider-Man (yeah I know it is coming out), Hulk, Superman, and well, just about any other comic book would do. Uh, that is nothing by Chaos comics of course. Not unless it was going to be some demon porno movie.

Lone Wolf and Cub, if it hasn’t been done already.
The Fat Ninja would be cool.

One (or all) of these:

‘Reid Fleming, World’s Toughest Milkman’

‘Flaming Carrot’ (forget that crappy Mysterymen movie)

‘Hate’ (although it would probably be a better mini-series)
Also, anything by Evan Dorkin (*Milk & Cheese - The Movie *!?)

Marc, I gotta agree with you - but look what happened to the Batman Beyond movie. It got completely hacked because the producers were worried about the violence in the movie and how it would affect children viewers. To do a comic book justice, it shouldn’t be watered down to be palatable to pre-teens. Unfortunately, a lot of people see an animated movie being made, and don’t think about whether it’s actually SUITABLE for their kids to watch (hence all the brain-dead parents taking their kids to go see South Park), which has negative consequences for the animated movies that really aren’t for kids.

Damn, beat me to it. But I think you have to throw the whole title of “Milk & Cheese: Dairy Products Gone BAD” into it, or mainstream america just won’t understand it.

“Merv Griffen!”

Hey, Evan Dorkin also wrote and drew every issue of Marvel’s Bill and Ted’s Excellent Comic Book series. Pretty funny stuff there, though the last issue felt a bit forced.

As for the OP, I’d vote for an Incredible Hulk movie, but only if Peter David were to write the script. And the Watchman movie script that’s been floating around the net seems to have a lot of potential, too…

Nor would I, but I think it’s telling that such a thing has never manifested. I personally don’t know the reasons why it hasn’t, but I imagine the difficulty of cramming it down to two hours is part of it.

Regarding Milk and Cheese, Dorkin did a story about just that. Apparently he HAS been approached for a Milk and Cheese movie, and his reaction was “You’ve got to be kidding! They can barely sustain a PAGE and you want them to be in a MOVIE?”

I think Milk & Cheese should find a magic whistle and then save the world.

Seriously, Dorkin’s ‘Eltingville Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Comic Book & Roleplaying Club’ would be HILARIOUS as a movie. I know there’s been talk of a tv series, but unless it were on HBO or something, it would get heavily censored.

We won’t even think of ‘The Murder Family’ movie…

There is no upcoming Wonder Woman movie. I know the current artist/writer, and have it confirmed from him that while it is in development, it hasn’t even gone past the treatment stage since 1995.

I think that a sequel to Mystery Men will happen before a Wonder Woman movie at this point.

In the last issue of Dork, Dorkin said that an Eltingville pilot for the Cartoon Network has been completed. He has no idea if it will ever air. I think it would be hilarious, though you’re right, it would be HEAVILY censored, even with Cartoon Network’s new “Adult Swim” thing.

I’d like to see a faithful adaptation of “The Dark Knight Returns.”

I’m dubious that “Watchmen” could compress into two hours, but a mini-series of it would be keen. Also, a bloody little title Frank Miller did by the name of “Hard Boiled” (no relation to John Woo) would be a grueling experience if done right.

Man, wouldn’t a ‘Dark Knight Returns’ adaptation be fun? If they could do it even CLOSE to the justice it would deserve…
Hastur:

Interesting… if that’s the case, then looks like some online folks have their info wrong. The article I saw this morning was a script review. Here’s where I read about it:
