A guy from our office was shot and killed on Monday. (In SC - it has been getting pretty big airplay around Chi.) They just arrested 4 suspects. All are between 14 and 18. The story as I hear it is, they tried to rob my co-worker and another guy around 10 p.m. as they were walking down the street. The victims ran, and the robbers shot both of them, killing one. Which raises the question, what do you do when your robbery plans go awry?
Apparently there’s no reason to break stride! The accusation is that these kids went on to commit something like 3 or 4 more armed robberies over the next couple of hours of people getting out of their cars, walking down the street, etc.
It gets even more ludicrous. These kids are caught because, the following day the sheriff is in a high speed chase after a bank robber. He bumps into a grey Volvo which turns out to belong to the mother of one of the suspects! The cops discovered some evidence when she drove to the police station to file a complaint. Food for thought next time junior asks to borrow the car!
So what conclusions, positive or negative, can you draw from this situation?
Simply that obviously some pretty awful things going on in our society, and it is only a matter of luck that you don’t run into them on any given day?
Or maybe, make sure you do everything you can/want to today, because some jerk might up and kill you this evening?
Not the kind of thing that encourages me to think positively about the current state and direction of society.
I guess the victims ran after being told to lie on the ground. Guess that was the wrong choice, as non of the subsequent victims were killed. I must admit I would eagerly hand over my wallet, keys, etc., but would be somewhat hesitant to lie down.
I may have to change my sig.
