I was at the Art Institute of Chicago and saw the Tokihiro Sato exhibit of “Photo Respiration”. The pictures were backlit gellatin (IIRC) and really created such a magic that it’s hard to transcent to clips on the internet. But they really got me.
Another artist, Isabel Samaras, has created some interesting twists on pop culture with mores and mythos intertwined. Here’s Gomez and Morticia Addams in the Garden of Eden (animated boobie warning). Another is titled “Besame Mucho” which has Captain Kirk and Spock dressed up as the Lone Ranger and Tonto.
Elizabeth McGrath does some funky and quasi-gothic, somewhat Carnivale, dioramas.
