Maybe I should not have said professional gamer. Not knowing nor caring about Steam cards, their rarity, and their worth, this might be a subtle form of investing, or you might simply be playing the lottery and lucky enough to be currently in the black. But buying games specifically to try to make money (regardless how you spend it) might qualify as investing.
I’ve purchased the complete Hitman package so far.
And let me add my praise for Shadow of Mordor for those who just got it- it is easily one of the best games to come out in recent years, and an absolute steal at 4 bucks (for the game of the year edition, even!).
My son has so far picked up Skyrim Special Edition (as the only person in the house who didn’t have his own copy already), Hitman: Blood Money, and Shadow of Mordor.
Total War: Warhammer has a decent discount, so I may be grabbing that this weekend.
It’s all about volume, I’ve sold over 2,000 cards at an average of, I suppose, €0.05 each. I can buy a bundle of 25-30 crap games for about a dollar and farm three or four cards per each game, so that makes for a pretty decent profit. Although, to be fair, I expect that’s probably why Steam has been cracking down on trading cards lately.
I went ahead and bought the Steam Link and Steam Controller for a hefty discount. It has mixed reviews. It had been on my wishlist, it might be shit but for $45 I’m willing to risk it. I never play games not on Steam anyway.
I also bought Samorost 3 and Botanicula for about $10 combined.
I grabbed Shadow of Mordor, Sunless Sea, Fallout 4 and Turing Test. All from my wishlist. I was wavering over Fallout 4 and XCOM2 now I have the buyers remorse.
I may get XCOM2 before the sale ends.
Xcom is getting some DLC in a couple of months which looks AMAZEBALLS. They are adding a ton of cool stuff from more interactivity between your soldiers, to more factions, to a ton of little touches that will make the world feel like it’s reacting to your actions and your characters a lot more than Vanilla.
they added os much stuff they almost made it into a sequel. Can’t wait
So what I’m saying is, pick it now that’s in discount, and play it when the DLC comes out.
XCom 1 or 2?
XCOM 2. There’s a new DLC coming out called the War of the Chosen. It looks like a great expansion.
When will Steam realize that this sale format screws them out of a lot of internet traffic and money?
I bought all that I’m going to buy; I suspect most of you have too.
In the old days, I spent about 3x this much spread out over the whole sale. And I browsed their website a lot more to check on stuff. Now I look once, I make my picks and I’m done.
When that happens.
I mean, sure, it “screws” them out of internet traffic. But you don’t make bank with traffic, unless you’re selling adspace, which they don’t.
As for screwing them out of money, I trust their accountants more than I trust gamers angry that they pay more money for games than they’d like. Sure, it’d be lovely for me if I got a lot of games for less than $5, like I used to; but if they’ve changed the model, I presume it’s because they’re making more money overall selling fewer games for more money.
I’m not so sure. The Flash sales probably generated some impulse purchases but normally I had a list of what I was hoping would show up. Then on the last day of the sale, instead of the first, I would buy anything that had not come up. Plus it was annoying having to login every 8 hours. Also, I think the return policy played a role as well since now somebody could return a game if they bought it and it was now on sale cheaper.
I’m having fun exploring casual games, as I don’t really have much time to invest in something hardcore. I bought Stardew Valley, which is surprisingly deep for a little farming game. Lots of NPCs, an interesting storyline (fighting off the evil fast food conglomerate while revamping your town’s community center) and apparently you can even find a mate and remodel your house. It reminds me how much I suck at resource management games, but it isn’t too frustrating yet, and best of all, it’s not a godawful freemium asking me to buy star points every five seconds.
There was a fairly long Star Valley thread last year.
I’d also recommend checking out the modding scene. Lots of cool stuff out there.
Shadow of Mordor, Tomb Raider (2013), and Ori and the Blind Forest: Definitive Edition. I’ll probably pick up Trine 3 and Apotheon before the sale ends.
Thanks to those who replied to my query about how to hide/delete games I don’t want to play. I have 285 Steam games, and I’ve at least gotten to the point where I’ve played all of them for at least 20-30 minutes. There are some that I literally can’t figure out why I purchased in the first place. Some were android/ipod games which should never have been converted to the PC, some were games I just didn’t like for one reason or another.
For example, I added Evoland 2 to the “horrible games” folder. It’s a NES (not even SNES) style RPG with a mind-numbingly simple story and game play, “towns” with 6 houses and 10 people. I think a 5 year old could play it with only some slight help getting past the puzzles. If you like it, more power to you, but there is nothing about this game that appeals to me. The only reason I wouldn’t permanently delete it is that I might forget and purchase it again 5 or 10 years from now.
I am resisting the Steam Summer Sale with all my willpower though. It actually sort of helps that I am trying to quit tobacco right now (24 hours without any so far!) and am transferring my anger to Steam and their stupid ass sales. Why the fuck to they pull this bullshit every fucking summer? Arrrggghhhh!
Thinking seriously about Cold Waters. An awesome sub sim that just came out.
Realistic cold war period sim.
The whole Trine series is great. I recommend picking up Trine 3 if you enjoyed the first two.
I bought Injustice: Gods Among Us Ultimate Edition and I also got Headlander which looks like a lot of fun.
The only thing I’ve bought so far is Wolfenstein: The New Order. It’s railroady, but pretty fun so far.
I’m staring pretty hard at Total Warhammer. Most of its negative reviews have to do with DLC pricing, so at the current sale price it might be worth it.
I’m also considering Planet Coaster and Dead Cells, but I’m not great at either of those types of games.
