What do you like that you wouldn't have thought you would like?

Raw tomatos. Hated them with a passion for many decades. As a kid, if a tomato even touched my sandwich, I wouldn’t eat the sandwich.

I’d try them again every few years, thinking maybe my tastes changed (and they do look good). But, nope, still hated them with a passion.

Then, I tried them again a couple years ago, and now I love them. Can’t get enough of them. Wish I had some right now slathered in salt, mayo and cilantro (which I also used to hate, but now love).

Hmmm…

Playing a musical instrument. A few years ago I thought about my impending retirement, and what I may do. I’m kinda a math/logic guy. And that should fit with music.

My Wife knew this and bought me a very nice Martin six string.

I can’t play a thing, but it pleases me to try. A couple of hours not thinking about anything else while I’m trying to learn an intro to a song. It’s nice to take your brain away from life for a bit.

As I type away on my computer, I did not want a computer career. I’m now GIS programmer looking at the retirement sail on the horizon. Great job that I enjoy.

The TV show Mom. Talk about a chick show!

I got hooked on Breaking Bad about a month ago. I resisted it because I don’t like violent shows. My son started watching it and that was all it took.

Not to mention cucumber rolls, avocado rolls, egg. As you said, plenty of ways to try sushi besides raw fish.

Did you move, perhaps? Tomatoes are wonderful in the summer in Indiana and other places north, but it’s impossible to get a good one south of Atlanta, GA.

I did move ~35 years ago, but that was from New Jersey, a state known for great tasting tomatoes (and corn).

I love the movies and that book. But, I love Charles Portis novels in general. If you haven’t read any others, I recommend it.

For mine, I’ll second @Qadgop_the_Mercotan . I used to make fun of pineapple on pizza till I met my wife who loves it. We’d get half and half pizzas, and me, eating more than half ended up with no choice. Now we get entire pizzas with it

The musical “Cats”. Saw it only because it was part of our theater season ticket package. Loved it.

(note: not the movie, which I have not seen)

mmm

I’m still trying them regularly, still hating. If they’re marinated in some vinegar, etc for a bit then they’re delicious. I love them in ANY other form. But when fresh, ugh. My elder daughter has the same reaction.

I will still try them though and hope I change.

Someone I know turned me on to pineapple, pepperoni & jalapeno. Sweet, salty, spicy, it’s very good.

  1. Hamilton. The premise sounds so cheesy- a rap musical about history? Come on. And I liked In The Heights (Lin Manuel Miranda’s previous show), but it wasn’t one I loved enough to memorize. But Hamilton is great.

  2. Salt on watermelon. Someone did it during some kind of potluck once and I thought it was super weird. I salt most of my fruit now.

  3. Also, The Princess Bride. IDK if I’ve told this story before or started writing it once and then deleted it, but I saw it at camp. I was already a little salty at the idea of having a movie night to begin with because I wanted to spend camp free of technology pretending I was a feral child who lived in the woods… but then I heard the title of the movie. And like. I’m sorry. We’re grubby little forest warriors surviving off the land with only our wits to rely on and you want us to watch a movie about not just a princess, but a PRINCESS BRIDE? Come on. Anyway. You’ve all seen it. You know.

  4. Jack Russell terriers. I hadn’t really known any and just knew from Knowing Things About Dogs that they were generally pretty yappy and hyperactive, which is not my style. Turns out, not all “high-energy” breeds are created equal and JRTs are indeed exactly my style. Especially when they reach age 11 or so and the pure energy begins to settle down, but they’re still every bit as intelligent and curious.

This. In general I hate to travel. When it comes to Las Vegas, however, it doesn’t have the feel of being away from everything that makes home such a nice place to be. I felt the same the one time I visited Japan.

Posting this made me realize that a part of my distaste for travel is being in a car. In my various trips to Vegas and when I went to Japan, cars were a very small part of the experience.

I recommend it. If you try it, start with salmon. Raw salmon, if it’s fresh and from a quality fish, tastes more like a meaty version of butter than it does fish.

Murder mystery shows, gentle comedy dramas.

Those kinds of things bored me stupid as a kid, when I demanded all my favourite TV have some kind of fantasy action element. I do still like that sometimes, though that genre now dominates TV schedules so much, it’s hard to find something that isn’t, so I need a break from it, and have gravitated to “old people TV” about some idyllic sweet-natured village in the Cotswolds harrowed by another absurd motive for a murder.

Wow, you were totally Fred Savage.

I hear there was kissing, and mushy stuff, too.

Grand Theft Auto V online. I thought I would hate it. Turns out it’s one of my favorite games.

For me it was Doberman Pinschers. When I was a kid, it was always terrifying to ride my bike past the house where two of them would bark and chase you along the fence. And the kids who lived in that house filled our ears with tales of their dangerous killer dogs. Plus, all Dobes looked alike to me.
Now that I’ve had a few of my own, I really appreciate how beautiful and smart and affectionate they are (as they bark and chase kids along the fence).
