What do you mean by 'snacks'

If you are invited somewhere and asked to bring some snacks, what would you bring? Please include your country and age

Potato chips, pretzels, popcorn or maybe cookies; soda. Indiana, USA and 59 years old.

Beer and pretzels work just fine for me. Single malts and/or G&T if the party was hosted by some of my UK colleagues.

Country: Angola
Age: Old enough to drink.

Snake lollies. Mostly because it’s an in-joke tradition amongst my mates. Australia, 43yrs old.

Crisps, dip, sometimes cheese, nuts, olives, biscuits, lollies - sort of fingery food which generally doesn’t require a lot of cooking, would be eaten between meals, can be eaten cold and likely not plated up other than poured into a bowl.

We often do a pot-luck dinner or a BBQ which you bring something more substatial to - this would not be considered snacks.

Australia, 37.

I would bring something salty and something sweet, potato chips and brownies perhaps.

Female 47 North Carolina

Crisps and dips, and if you’re lucky I’ll make you some Bloody Mary tomatoes too:http://www.deliaonline.com/recipes/main-ingredient/vegetables/tomato/bloody-mary-tomatoes.html

ETA: I’m a 34 year old Brit.

Cheese and crackers or homemade Chex mix, if I want to be there. The cheapest chips available if I don’t want to be there.

Potato chips, pretzels, crudités and dip, tortilla chips and salsa. 40s, New England/New York

Chips and guac or chips and salsa, a relish tray, one-bite dessert items like brownies or cookies, chex mix, or a cheese plate. Female, Illinois, thirtysomething.

Probably something like tortilla chips and salsa, rotel dip or guacamole, or some other chip/dip combo. Or maybe a bunch of raw vegetables with ranch dip, or a fruit tray with some sort of fruit dip (caramel sauce?) would be good if I thought the crowd was more health-conscious than most.

Male, US (Texas) 40 yrs old.

Maryland, USA, 59 years old:

I wouldn’t bring anything to drink; my assumption would be that either the host was bringing drinks, or someone else had been tasked to do so.

Depending on my mood, I might bring cheese and crackers, or a veggie and dip tray, or chips and dip/guac, or some mixed nuts.

Crisps, olives, twiglets, houmous and tzatziki dips, or anything I can buy in M&S. UK, 43.

This would get you banned from parties in the UK. Bringing booze is obligatory (wine for dinner, beer/wine/fizz for a daytime party).

I’m thinking chips and dip/salsa. They are easily portable and served for when I’m asked to bring something with me.

When I’m hosting, snacks are more likely to include less portable options like veggies and dip, or olives, crackers, cheese and dry sausages, grapes, etc. I’m not going through the trouble of wrapping up a plattered snack, nor am I going to spend 15 minutes slicing stuff at the party I just arrived at.

I would upgrade the snack if it’s a fancy-ish party, but generally I would expect those to be affairs where the host provides the food and I would bring some wine.

US, 42yo

US - 43

Beer plus one of the following:
chips & salsa
crudites and dip
cheese & crackers
olives
nuts
savory bite sized cold finger foods like mini quiches

Booze for a party in the USA get’s a BYOB on the invite. I wouldn’t supply a party with booze when told to bring a snack. Bring a snack eliminates lots of food choices too. Usually they ask for a dessert or snack. They ask for a dish to pass in addition if they don’t supply the meal.

We’ll be in London for a week in late September and plan to pick up snacks for our rented flat. What are your favorite M&S foods to snack on? /hijack

I am totally making those tomatoes for the next shindig. Thanks for the recipe!
