What do you think Democrats’ backup plans for 2024 are? Think they’ll be any good?

I think Clinton would have been a fine President (in 2016). This time I’m okay with Harris, Buttigieg, or Klobuchar. (perhaps others, but I’m not convinced Abrams is ready for the top spot, nor AOC.) I’ll put Warren and Sanders in the “too old” category (so sue me). I’m on the fence about Newsome.

I agree, but If depends on the woman.

That’s not a slam on her - I’d gladly vote for Harris.

How many voters would vote for Gina Raimondo over Trump, but wouldn’t vote for Biden? I think a lot. (If you haven’t heard of Raimondo, that’s one of her electoral advantages. And her problem in this context may be lack of sufficient pushiness to run for national office.)

I would agree that there are voters who will accept a hard-charging man like Biden but wouldn’t accept the same in a woman.

So it sounds as though the only candidate we’d both be OK with is Kamala Harris. That seems like a good sign for her should it come to that.

I’m sorry, but no. I have never heard of Gina Raimondo, I doubt I am alone in this, and the Presidential election is a bit over fifteen months away. If people who post here haven’t heard of you yet, that is the opposite of an advantage.

52 years old, that’s good. Former Treasurer, then Governor of Rhode Island, current Secretary of Commerce. Seems reasonable. Former venture capitalist. Wait, what? Co-chair of the Bloomberg campaign in 2020……after that didn’t work out, she was suggested as an ideal Biden running mate by George Will. Hard veto.

No, I suspect it is more likely that in the moment Harris blocks. I have my doubts he would challenge her - they are too politically entwined from back in the day. He was elected mayor of SF in 2003, Harris DA of SF same year. He as elected Lieutenant Governor in 2010, Harris CA Attorney General the same year. They’re old allies and more importantly are part of the same political network in CA with a heavy overlap of supporters and financial backers. Running against her would cause him some genuine political heartburn.

If Newsom wants to be president, I think it’s more likely after he terms out as governor. I think a more likely scenario, assuming a Harris flame out in 2024, is running in 2028.

I could always be wrong of course, it would be quite interesting if he did. But you’d see some real backlash comments in the papers .

She was governor of Rhode Island and now is Secretary of Commerce.

That’s never an electoral advantage.

Plenty will. Gina is a good friend of mine (I met her briefly once but we’re all good friends here in RI), I’m sure plenty of people would be willing to vote for her over any of the candidates including Biden if they knew something about her. She’s not someone who spent here life in politics, only pursuing the RO governor’s office in 2015, and then before long called up to serve in the Biden administration where
I think she’s been highly effective. She was considered for Biden’s running mate in 2020 before he settled on Harris. She’s highly intelligent and capable and I hope we’ll see her considered for the executive office some day.

Agreed.

I think that Newsom is the next democratic president after Biden (unless Biden is re-elected and then dies in his second term, in which case Harris becomes the first female president. I suspect she’d do a fine job - just a hunch - but I don’t think she can ascend to the office via her own direct election).

Agree as well. Although I took a lot of grief the last time I suggested that post-Biden the Ds ought to run a white male if they’re serious about winning.

A Minnesota congressman is considering a bid. I doubt he will challenge Biden hard; more likely, he’s putting his name out there in case Biden falls seriously ill (or worse) in the next twelve months:
