But equally as important as the “Buffy meets big bad, Buffy fights big bad, Buffy beats big bad” formula is the metaphor. The show has always been about a group of friends maturing together, with monsters thrown in. The last two seasons were weakened because there really wasn’t that metaphor. We can all identify with unrequited crushes or worrying about being popular or what have you. How many of us can really identify with trying to reintegrate ourselves into our circle of friends after they resurrect us? The two-hour format would probably lack that metaphorical aspect and that would lessen the film.
I see your point Otto and agree with you to a degree. I, however, don’t think that the lack of a strong metaphorical aspect or identifiable scenario would lessen the movie to the degree that it should not be made.
the mention of Mr Lee & Spike in the same post makes me wonder…
SPIKE VS. DRACULA
“Give me back my five quid, Drac!”
(a ref to the Buffy Vs Dracula ep starting season 5)
How about Bram Stoker’s Dracula using the Buffy cast…
SMG or Eliza- Mina
Alyson- Lucy
“Glory”/“Anya”/Michelle T/Amber B as the Three Brides & varied players
AS Head- Van Helsing
“Jonathan”- Renfield
Nicholas- Harker
James Marsters- Holmwood or Morris
“Warren”-Morris or Holmwood
Tom Lenk-Seward
and as Dracula, either the guy who played him in the Ep OR “The Mayor”
Just give me Paul Reubens in the Best Death Scene Ever!!!
.
how could I have miscast the Buffy Stoker’s DRACULA!
Alysson as Lucy, still
Nicholas as Seward
Seth Green as Morris
Amber Benson as Lady Holmwood
and the Kennedy chick as a VampLucy victim
Wow we completely agree and disagree in one post!
Buffy the series would have been truly epic if it ended with The Gift. But alas, the rumors of UPN Buffy are true it turns out. While a few individual episodes were clearly worth it, the vast majority of the major plots, character “development”, and episodes were major failures, especially when compared to Seasons 1-5 and the advances shown on Angel and the brillance of Firefly. Given that, I doubt any movie could be done, unless it was from Season 3 or so- won of those “now it can be told or actions that were hidden later by magic” sorts of deals maybe. That way many of the departed big hitters such as Oz and Cordy could be invovled. A Jenny Calender extended shower scene would be nice too. Still, maybe the best answer is to let Buffy go.
We still have Angel.
Now for the disagreement- Spike as the most evil man in history? Hah, he wasn’t even the most evil character on the show. To paraphrase Austin Powers movies- he was Evil Light, great taste but less evil. Several of the Big Bads and Angelus were much bigger bad asses then Spike ever was. In fact, Spike’s record of against either Buffy or Angel was a Buffalo Bills Super Bowl like type of sucess. Remember how a big deal was made out of Spike finally getting the upper hand this season against Angel- the first time he was able to do so (only after playing for the good guys- umm well relatively good guys).
Spike was alot of things, but “most evil” was not one of them.
Got to agree…Spike was only playing at being Evil. The fact that he went and got a soul is proof of that. Even as a soul-less demon he was not that evil.
I still want nekkid Dawn and Willow! And Anya. And Glory. And Tara. And Drusill. And Darla. And Cordy. And…
Michelle Trachtenberg’s been over 18 for all of three months. Are the calls for her nudity at all premature?
Guess not.
Well, we know what happens to Spike, but remember when he first surfaced? The killer of two slayers, an absolutely menacing entity. That’s why I thought of a prequel. Spike during the depression era, being perceived as the ultimate evil, but doing his thing, as we all know. Doing a Spike movie, taking place post Buffy wouldn’t be nearly as interesting as a prequel. Better hurry up tho. JM isn’t getting any younger.
Conditions:
- Darker. Show what they couldn’t show on TV. Push that envelope baby!
- Different cast completely. I love the scoobies dearly but they’ve had enough.
- Keep Joss. Nobody can do it like him.
I still have a knee-jerk reaction every Thursday night to get home early, make some popcorn, grab some tissues (the weirdest scenes have made me cry) and watch BTVS.
sniff I miss it.
I’d be up for a movie, definitely. Joss, obviously, has to control every part of it. I’d also like Christophe Beck to handle the soundtrack. And, contrary to what jellytoes mentions about the tiredness of the original cast members, the cast has to be the same. (Although I do like jellytoes’ idea of it being darker.)
I can see a full movie working out and working well for the fans. I’m not sure that the rest of the public would enjoy it, but I think they’re more ready for a Joss-helmed Buffy at the box office than they were for the television show.
So you want a movie, based on a TV series, that was based on a movie.
Seriously, I think it might be okay. I liked the Buffy series. I think a new movie would be equally good, though I don’t know how they would outdo the series. Except that now all girls on the planet are vampire slayers now, right? Not too exciting with a planet full of superheroes. But then again, maybe it would be. Get rid of the baddies once and for all.
Whatever it is, it has to have Joss in green makeup dancing in the background.
No, not all girls on the planet, just all the girls who were potential Slayers.
And not murdered with those big stabby knives. Lot of that was going around.
Of course they made it seem like those were all the last potentials being killed or hiding at Buffy’s (wasting valuable screen time that Xander et al could have gotten. . . ), but we learned in the finale that in fact wasn’t the case.
I would love to see the movie take a darker turn…even darker than the last 2 seasons. I loved where the show was going with the conclusion of Season 5 and Season 6 and, despite the hiccup of Season 7, would love to see it continue to progress.
The one thing I would NOT want from a Buffy movie is a change in any of the cast. If someone is not available to do the movie I would like it explained as a death or some other reason why they were not there. One remarkable aspect of the show was that the lives of these characters kept changing and evolving…this would be a great excuse to force change.
Of course you would have to keep Joss. That is a given.
Think of that for a series- each ep begins with a new Slayer, just beginning her training (or not), just as she meets her Watcher. They go through her struggles, emotional and physical, as she becomes the Slayer, and the… she is killed.
Every week a new Slayer, a new era, a new place on Earth as they go through the liniage of the Slayers and the Watchers, we get to see the history.
I’d watch it.
Nothing.
Really.
Not now, not five years from now. I’m content with all seven years of Buffy, and with Angel as it currently stands. Any movie would just end up being a large battle royale. You could just watch Blade or Underground, and get much of the same thing.
It’s not like Buffy is Star Trek or anything like that. With the original crew, you had just three years, and they focussed mostly on a few people from the bridge, and they waited more than a decade before making a film. People were eager.
But as for Buffy, there’s enough of a link still around, either on Angel, or websites, or the DVDs, or reruns, that the hunger will never really be as strong.
Lots and lots and lots of blowjobs.
Oh yeah, and lesbians. Tons of lesbians
A Buffy movie based on the series, which was based on the original movie, would be like the American Coupling, an American series based on a British series based on an American series.
And look what happened to the American Coupling.
