What does [Hubba hubba! Meow!] mean? [facebook comment]

What does it mean when a woman comments under a man’s picture on Facebook, “Hubbe hubba! Meow?”

I don’t want to misinterpret this woman’s comment. We’ve spent some time together in social situations with mutual friends.

It can mean anything from “That’s an extremely attractive picture and my ovaries are exploding, please ask me out.” to “I am a terrible flirt who posts encouraging comments on men’s pictures all the time.” to “I’m facebooking drunk.”

I think I can rule out the second possibility with this woman. It seems like flirting with men isn’t her thing. She’s been with the same man for five years but it seems that relationship is in limbo and they aren’t really seeing each other at this time. So, I’m wondering if she’s testing other waters? Or if interpreting her comment in that manner would be reading far too much into it and asking her out would be a terrible faux pas. We have close mutual friends that we’ve recently spent time together with (a couple weekends) without her partner being present. And now this? But if I act too boldly, I could make future social situations extremely awkward.

Thanks for your reply, btw!

BTW…It should read, Hubba hubba! Meow!

(Not Hubbe…typo)

But isn’t Meow normally used between women as an ironical thing suggesting cattiness? I don’t get its use in this context.

Think of it as “me-YOW”. It’s a catcall/wolf whistle thing. The whole comment is just saying the picture is sexy or attractive. Doesn’t mean she’s necessarily flirting, just appreciating the view.

“I’m making fun of you by sarcastically pretending that you look hot.”

Thanks all! I really wanted to get some objective feedback. It seems the bottom line is, the meaning of the comment in and of itself can’t be determined without more context, information and observations.

Indeed.

It seems pretty obvious to me.

I find it very hard to believe that such a comment has more than one meaning – although some people may try to claim that it does, if somebody criticizes them for making such a comment.

Which meaning do you think it has?

I have been known to comment “Yowsa” on occasion as well but being a male presenting person I have never added a “meow.”

A few times I’ve seen women say not “Meow!,” but a semi-growled “Rrrrrow!” to indicate sexual interest. In a commercial for the sporty version of the Fiat 500, a Viagra dropped a window drops into the gas tank of a Fiat 500. The car suddenly sprouts bulging fenders. An Italian woman raises an eyebrow and growls softly, “Rrrrowwr.”

Yeah, I’m with the ‘don’t read too much into it’ crowd. Just a compliment. If it’s more, I’m sure she’ll let you know.

The masculine version would be, “Hominahominahominahomina…”

Well, there’s also this (first thing I thought of after reading OP).

Another possibility (it’s happened to me) is that autocorrect changed her slightly misspelled comment regarding the Hubble Space Telescope and astrophysics in general to what was posted.

Hate when that happens.

Yep. It’s generally feline when voiced, rather than written, which is probably why the woman the OP is quoting used ‘meow’, but it’s definitely a ‘rrrowr’.
