What Drink Should I Order?

You could try pear cider, if they’ve got it.

If you’re the only female in a business setting, it’s very important not to go with a froo-froo drink - anything with ice cream, little umbrellas, or fruit will brand you as “silly” in a heartbeat.

My favorite drink in these situations is a gin gimlet. Vodka gimlets are OK too, but I prefer gin. It’s often served in a martini glass, but doesn’t taste like paint thinner.

Scotch and water with a twist

Martini (plain - none of these newfangled things that people call martinis)

Manhattan

Remember, you’re in a business setting so the drink needs to be “serious.” Nothing with an umbrella, nothing with more than two ingredients. Nothing that says “I used to drink these in college and get SO fucked up.” You’re drinking to be socialable.

If you’re worried about knowing how to stop drinking without looking like a light weight, order a drink with a clear liquor (vodka or gin), and after the first one (or two) start ordering water. No one will pay much notice and you get to stay sober.

Try a cosmo, but instead of the contreau in it substitute ameretto.

Well, if you want to expand your drinking horizons, try some real beer. In a glass, please, ladies don’t drink straight from the bottle. Maybe something with a slight fruit tinge to it, like Purple Haze or Pete’s Strawberry Blonde. You might also like Sierra Nevada Pale Ale.

If I’m going to drink with a meal, I prefer to order one fairly strong drink (generally a Long Island Tea) and a glass of water. Sip the drink, eat a few bites, sip the water. You get the flavor and sociability of drinking with whoever, it satisfies your thirst better, and keeps you from getting drunk, and it costs less. Win, win, win, win.
