What finally was the proof concerning Umkay?

I OTOH enjoyed going back to those threads, particularly the partswhere I was being called an asshole for being totally right about **Umkay **by the people who were heaping praise on themselves for being totally wrong because their utter wrongness proved that they were good people. This shit never gets old!

One of my friends, who is a quad, broke his hip tandem skydiving.

When one eats crow when they are wrong, it’s a sign of humility.
When one crows when others are wrong… not so much.

Just sayin’.

The parts I most enjoy are not where I’m proven right (I kinda knew that all along) but the parts where the people who made idiots of themselves defending Umkay’s authenticity are explaining why they were right to do so, and still do so, even after being proven false. I like this argument in particular: “Her posts were so well-written and so engaging, I’m angry that she has been outed as a troll, and I still wish she hadn’t been.” IOW, lie to me! Please!

That is some funny, funny shit.

What board isn’t easy to troll when the members, at least initially, take people at their word? Justice prevails when they play their little troll games. Slowly sometimes, but it prevails.

Well in fairness, we should present their arguments. From your link:

That seems like a reasonable position, speaking as someone who didn’t read Umkay’s thread until well after his/her alleged resurrection.

It is appropriate to be polite, pending solid evidence. Some cannot grok to this.

I just don’t understand certain people misusing the words douche or asshole, as if it means someone who is being nice when the speaker is the one being rude. It’s like they get the meaning completely backwards

There are seventeen words I never misuse. Two are “douche” and “asshole”.

BigT aims to misuse at least one word a day. It’s a hobby of his.

(bolding mine)

wince

Dude, unfortunate choice of words there!

The subject is the evidence that led to Umkay being banned. Please refrain from sniping at each other about your behavior in those threads or anywhere on the boards. Y’all know where the Pit is and what it’s for.

You inserted a comma, eh?

I an unmoved by your apology.

He spelled everybody as “E’RYBODY”? I’d give him a warning too.

I believe there was also some thoughts that the troll playing Umkay had also submitted a question and gotten picked up by the Savage Love column?

Yes, that was a couple of weeks after umkay was banned.

Right. It should be “ERR’BODY”.

Exactamately.

Now I have the Homestar Runner song in my head. Err’body err’body!

Munchausen by Internet,

Interesting article that may apply to our friend.

From the article: Like other forms of the disorder, Feldman explains that Munchausen by internet usually manifests in the late teens or early 20s. It’s often preempted or accompanied by other psychological issues, most commonly personality disorders. And it predominantly affects women. “I’m not clear on all the reasons for that, but it’s a pretty consistent finding,” Feldman explains. “And many of them have medical or nursing training… Their fascination with medical issues is expressed in their career choices.”

The lies escalate slowly… The lies are intricate, detailed, engrossing. Terrible setbacks are followed by miraculous recoveries. And if someone else becomes the center of attention, their condition will dramatically worsen or they will become the victim of a sudden tragic event.

…Some people even invent tertiary characters—friends, siblings, a concerned mother—to jump into internet threads and corroborate their stories.

The lies slowly escalate, pile up, and create an improbable whole. Then one day, you realize you’re friends with a 15-year-old chronic migraine sufferer online who also happens to be a fourth-year medical school student who plays drums in a band at night—despite those crippling migraines—to pay his med school tuition because his deaf mother and alcoholic stepfather have no interest in his baby-genius education. …

And on that day, you feel like a total schmuck.

This schmucky feeling is a byproduct of the internet. Our natural bullshit detectors are muted online; we can’t rely on facial expressions and other physical cues for sensing lies, and studies suggest that without those cues, we’re prone to generously fill in the blanks. There’s more at the recommended article, including the motives. Basically, there are two: narcissists like the attention, sadists like inflicting harm. The latter are properly known as trolls; I suspect Umkay enjoyed the attention. I’ll note also that the narcissist interviewed in the article was a queen of drama.
