What food makes your dog crazy?

Harry, my chihuahua, begs for just about anything my wife or I are eating. But he goes crazy when I cook Andouille. Much too spicy for the boy, so I can’t share. What food do your pups crave?

My beagle only has drool for cat food. I feed the cats up high on a counter and poor Blue the beagle sits down below in the classic beg stance, as if the cats care. Every now and again they will kick her a morsel and look down derisively at her scrambling for it. It’s really kinda sad. My Yorkie could care less for anything, I have a tough time getting her to eat much.

My dogs don’t get people food as a rule, especially not from currently-eating humans. If there’s dog-safe leftovers, they might get a taste in their bowl. Zef had half a boiled egg the other day that she was quick to scoff. I didn’t notice any stinky consequences.

Cabbage! Georgie will come running from anywhere else in the house when I cut up cabbage. He runs to the kitchen and sits a polite distance from where I’m cutting it up…but the perfect distance for me to toss a piece here and there for him to catch.

Ice cubes.

Bacon jerky. This is not actually a dog treat, that is, it’s made for human consumption. He gets it only when our grandchildren come over. This is some kind of operant conditioning to keep him from barking at the kids, who are afraid of him (because he barks at 'em, it’s a vicious circle). It works though. He is such a good boy, and he has learned to associate it with the little kids, so he loves 'em and is always happy happy happy to see them. But keeps his eyes on the treat bag.

Same here. I’ve done all I can to nip begging in the butt, even if I get the forlorn “is there some for me?” look from across the room. For special occasions, Vaya’s go-to is steak. We both love ourselves a T-bone.

Same here… and the cat really, really wants the dogs’ food. Either critters is weird or animal nutritionists really don’t know their stuff. I’m betting on the former.

I caved in to my dogs’ plaintive looks years ago, and that bell can’t be unrung.

I made an omelette yesterday and gave them the egg shells. I fried some sausage and gave them the sleeves from which they sucked the remains. I poured the sausage grease into their regular dog food and they ate it completely. They’re 13 and 10, so I haven’t abruptly ended their lives yet.

Pizza crust. He can’t get enough.

One of my dogs loves spicy food, and it doesn’t seem to cause any issues. Is there some reason you think it will be a problem? One of mine also loves raw cabbage; the other seems to hate it but eats it anyway so that the cabbage-lover doesn’t get her share.

Lo Mein. I have to order mine with no onion/scallion because my dog loves it so.

Shredded cheddar cheese, they don’t go crazy, but they do love it.

I almost forgot, that absolutely love rotisserie chicken, probably more than they do cheddar cheese.

All the usual treats–bacon, cheese, steak fat, chicken knuckles and the like of course. There are some oddball items they love though, like French fries, potato chips and, oddly pretzels. They will sit there and drool for a pretzel worse than they will for a bit of bacon. Weirdos. Make it a peanut butter filled pretzel and they’ll take your hand off at the wrist if you’re not quick about it.

Do you mean scarf [down]?

Potato potato. Separated by a Common Language: scoff and scarf

Pork rinds.

Oh, I forgot. I keep chicken livers for cat treats. Dog-beagle loves them too. You better put it on the dog dish cause you might lose a finger.

They’re no longer with us :-(.

But pizza crusts and rotisserie chicken as mentioned above they were wild about. Our dog before that we got a couple of weeks before Thanksgiving. She smelled the turkey cooking all morning and was sniffing around the kitchen. She got some later and always loved turkey.
