The Gold Box D&D games. I cannot stress enough how important it is to keep the combat turn-based.
I still play that now and again. It’s really fun trying to get it to run on a modern computer. Hear, hear.
It would be nice to see a new Harpoon too.
If you’re looking for excitement, I can introduce you to the game Clean My House.
Maybe some of the old adventure games. AGD was gracious to update Quest for Glory II and some of the King’s Quest games for free. And the first two Monkey Islands got graphical AND voice updates.
Blackthorne would be fun. I’d be happy to just be able to get a copy of the original one to work.
There was a GBA update in 2003.
Have you played realMyst? It’s a little dated at this point, but it rebuilt Myst into a realtime 3D engine and was absolutely fantastic. It had to trade off some of the finer visual details, but overall did a ton to make it feel more like real space. Some of the Ages with choppier transitions felt MUCH more like actual spaces rather than a series of screenshots.
My entry to the list: I want the entire Quest for Glory series recut into a single epic. Give them coherent graphics and controls in line with modern adventure games. The first four games can stay almost totally intact, but replacing the fifth with something that actually feels like the earlier ones.
SunDog: Frozen Legacy, which I played on the Atari ST. An early favorite game of mine. You traded, you fought personally and in your ship, you got into the systems of your ship to repair it and add special components, you could drive overland; it would be neat to see it expanded and upgraded into a modern “sandbox” game.
I loved Auto Duel to death on my C64. I also miss Toejam and Earl…

I’d love to see Alpha Centauri updated. With the same hard scifi aesthetics and the same factions.
I came here to say X-Com and I see the OP and I are on the same page. It could definitely use the Civilization treatment - graphical update, balance tweaks, bug fixes, refine certain elements, etc. without changing the overall flavor of the game.
I shall NOT speak of the alleged X-Com “remake” currently in development, however.
Mail Order Monsters. Anyone else remember this game?
That was a great game and I fully endorse your idea.
Something along those lines called Naval War Arctic Circle is supposed to come out next year.
Star Control 2. Great storyline and universe.
Updating the combat (to 3D) though would be hard. 3D spaceship combat has never quite worked for me…
Other games I was thinking about last night are Wing Commander, Panzer General (the original), and Fallout 1 and 2 (done in modern 3D graphics but still in 3rd person and turn based…and maybe finish the original Fallout 3 in the same way, instead of the current Fallout 3/New Vegas style). One game I expect to get remade using modern graphics is Total War: Rome, but I’d like to see the original game (maybe using the Total Realism mod) but with, say, the Shogun II engine.
Thanks for all the great responses so far!

Indeed. I have high hopes for that one.
Because we’re talking about it in another thread, I want Master of Orion 2 to be updated. Not too many changes as I love the level of micromanaging and gameplay, but there has to be a way to surrender a planet when all you have is missiles and all the enemy ships have are bombs and they surround your planet and even on fast animations and auto-battle, they still take forever to defeat you cause you can’t damage them cause of the shields, and their bombs do like 10 damage to your planet because you have barrier shields. Also, bigger galaxy
I’d love a graphical update of Baldur’s Gate 2, especially if the best old mods could be updated and included too (much like how people are modding Dragon Age). I love that game with various good mods, and still play it now and then. I would like to see it polished up a tad and put into a nice modern game engine with better graphics and such.
It was a Commodore 64 game where you explored a derelict spacecraft and started coming across messages written in blood by the wounded crew and other clues. The ship is infested with shambling monsters and there’s cut scenes showing the monsters huddled around a pod, followed by a scene of the pod opened and the monsters slaughtered – following which, there’s an extremely powerful white shambling monster stalking you. Limited ammo, an NPC to rescue and a soundtrack that used to make me jump every time the monsters attacked.
According to Wiki, there’s a fan made Doom-esque remake but I’d love to see it get serious treatment and remade by modern standards.
The entire Ultima series.
If that’s too much to ask then I’ll settle for an updated version on Theme Hospital.
