After seeing someone FINALLY do a proper remake of XCom and learning that my favorite game of all time is getting remade, I got to thinking of a few other games that I would love to see remade with today’s hardware.
What are your Top 3?
Mine:
Neuromancer - Interplay 1988 - Based on William Gibson novel. Absolutely loved this game back in the day… Cyber Cowboys, Dystopian society, I.C.E., “Jacking” in and the internet before people know what the net was complete with a soundtrack from DEVO!
Darklands - Microprose 1992 - Very ambitious and way ahead of its time. Could be very good with today’s tech. Maybe Skyrim could be considered a spiritual successor in terms of open world.
Master of Magic Microprose 1994 I have this and Alpha Centuri as must remakes for Firaxis who are the remnants of Microprose. Way ahead of its time and considered by most as the father of the 4x genre. Come on Sid remake it!!
Why is Civ 1 not considered the progenitor? It has much deeper cultural penetration than MoM, and what’s more once MoM came out the 4X genre seemed already well established. Not that I didn’t deeply enjoy MoM, if you overlook its hilarious AI bugs, and I would agree that it deserves a remake.
X-Wing. Also TIE Fighter. Really wonderful games, and if you could add a good, working multiplayer system, they could be huge hits. Release them ahead of the new sequel trilogy to build hype.
I’d like to see a remake of Master of Orion (yes, there have been several similar games, as well as several MOO sequels, but I mean the original game, re-done pretty much as it was but with modern graphics), and the original Fallout series (Fallout 1 and 2, and the proposed 3rd one as well). Don’t get me wrong, I love the FPS Fallout 3/NV, but would love to see the original game re-done in a similar way to X-COM…I think it would be kick ass!
I’ll go with Warlords III (Reign of Heroes/Darklords Rising). Although that’s only 15 years old, so maybe it doesn’t count as “retro”. I loved the campaigns from Darklords Rising!
Great coincidence, I was just poking around today looking for a remake of Warlords for Android And not 10 minutes ago I was reading that very Wikipedia page.
Not necessarily retro, but I would pay serious cash dollars money for the earlier Elder Scrolls titles re-released under the Skyrim engine. Oblivion was unplayable past a point, and I can’t find my Morrowind disks.
Right there with you - and would also add “Red Baron.” Anything flight-ish is so damned arcade-y these days. Would love to see these games revisited. (Now, you could even incorporate surface battles for X-Wing/Tie Fighter.)
Would also like to see Interstate '76 revisited with a modern game engine. Loads of fun.
