So many amazing games were made in the early PC, Amiga, C=64, ST days that were severely limited by the early technology. But now with modern PC technology many these are screaming for a remake.
With the recent announcement of Wasteland being remade, it got me thinking of other retro games that we might see again.
My top remake choice would be Neuromancer, what is yours?
I have no idea if it’s possible, but a first-person perspective Joust would be cool. Same thing with Robotron: 2084, though the last is video-game perfection, imho.
Archon
Beach-Head
Choplifter
Buck Rogers: Countdown to Doomsday – Loved the heck out of this on my Sega.
Shadowrun – Loved this on Sega as well.
Impossible Mission – Maybe just to win this thing for once. It was cool, but I never figured out what I was doing in the game.
Raid on Moscow
Raid on Bungeling Bay
Karateka
I’d love to see some of these for my ThinkPad or iPad. I’m sure there are some equivalents out there.
Not sure if this is old enough to count in your definition of retro, but is this where I get to reiterate the perennial cry, “Why won’t anyone remake Master of Magic – and finally give it decent AI?” cry that’s been ringing across the Internet for so long?
Therere a couple recent MoM-alikes out there (Warlock: Master of the Arcane and Elemental Fallen Enchantress); I’ve tried Warlock and found it fairly flat - tried it again recently after a few patches and they’ve added stuff like heroes and terrain effects but the flavor was still kind of lacking. I was hoping Fallen Enchantress would hit my 10-dollar price point during the recent Steam sale but I guess that will have to wait until the summer. Have you messed with either of them?
Crush Crumble and Chomp would make a kick ass RTS game. either playing as the monster or as the city defenders. Add in monster vs monster combat ala mail order monsters mentioned above, and maybe a little of the feel of Rampage and you’ve got a great and versatile game.
I do not have the cite, but the game Elemental: War of Magic was initially going to be named Masters of Magic 2 but Stardock could not secure rights. The game was ambitious but sucked.
A second attempt has been released and is by most accounts pretty decent. Its called Fallen Enchantress.
Thanks to MAME, I’m still playing Joust - pretty much since the day it came out. It’s appearance in the novel “Ready Player One” endeared the book to me.
My other favorite, which is ported to darn near every platform there is, is Asteroids.
Ultima I-III- They’re classic and genre defining, but they’ve aged pretty poorly in comparison to the rest of the series. Also I think a series of fully 3-D re-imaginations in the spirit of the originals (as in NOT ANYTHING AT ALL LIKE THAT ONE WE DON"T SPEAK OF) could be really excellent.
Ultima Underworld- Still the most in depth dungeon crawler in my mind. I’d love to see this with modern tech while still keeping with the difficulty and “dungeon simulator” concept.
Elite- Do I need to say more?
Wolfenstien 3D- I Don’t want a modern bland FPS. Instead I want a remake done in the DOOM or DUKE 3D engines. More complex and dynamic maps with better AI and lot’s n lot’s of additions and new levels. But still keeping with the “2.5d” look and feel.
Also it’s not really retro, but I’d kill for a version of Daggerfall that was actually finished and functioning in a semi-modern engine.
Lemmings!
I’d love a brand new Super Metroid. The graphics still look delightful even today, but a new world to explore would be so much fun.
Terranigma
Gauntlet
Seems like it’d be very difficult to adapt that into a first-person perspective without completely changing the gameplay, which relied heavily on being able to see (and fire in) all directions simultaneously. Joust, however, could potentially be pretty cool.
