What in the world is this [in a Norelco trimmer]?

I bought a Norelco model QT4070 trimmer. When I pulled off the “cutting unit” for cleaning there was this brown substance of gooey consistency on the unit. It was very weird and I had Norelco send me a replacement cutter. Straight out of the package I had a look at it and guess what - same kind of brown crap on it!

Picture attached.

  1. What the hell is this and why is it there?
  2. Is it toxic?
  3. What should I do?

I think it’s just some sort of lubricant.

Yes, its lubricant. I’ve seen that in a few electric razors/trimmers in my time.

Probably a combination lube/corrosion protection.
New bicycle chains are covered with a similar substance.

Hm ok, what about questions 2 and 3?

Every trimmer I’ve ever had has this (I know because I take them apart to clean them now and then).

Don’t eat it like you shouldn’t chug motor oil but don’t be afraid of it being inside the trimmer.

Just leave it in there and ignore it, it should keep your trimmer running for longer.

grease.
not toxic. Its just coloured brown to be able to see it, but its just the same as Vaseline.
Leave it there.

Its like oil, but its thick stuff so that it doesn’t just run away.

( High temperature or high pressure or other expensive fancy grease may be toxic. Moly grease contains molydenum disulphide, which is also the black powdery stuff inside “dry” voltaic cells. Not the black hard rod which is carbon. )

OK, I use the provided hard bristle brush to clean the hair from the cutting unit and I contaminated the bristles with that stuff. No big deal as it’s not toxic?

Anyone?

Correct, no big deal. I’ve done the exact same thing, just rinse the brush off with water. I’m still alive to post this.

LOL

Mineral oils and castor (veggie) oils are used as lubricants, even in machinery, so not all lubricants are refined chemicals or present in toxic levels.

.

I have very sensitive skin (allergy-induced eczema and psoriasis) and I’ve had that stuff on my face with no ill effects.

So, my trimmers came with a small bottle of lube for the blade. I forgot the brand, but, its for cutting hair or beards, a bunch of guards and other nifty things. Also has the thick stuff on the inside and for the blades themselves the manual said to put in a drop every, can’t remember now, x-amount of hours. I put a drop in once a month, actually keeps hair and skin oil from gumming them up, and cuts better/faster too.
