What is FARK?

I keep hearing people referring to this and have no idea what it is. Is it a message board? A language?

Sorry, don’t mean to be ignorant.

Fark is a site which lets members submit other websites (usually with amusing headlines), and then moderators pick what gets put on the main page. It ends up being a list of amusing websites/news stories/etc. Each posting has a comments link.

That’s the basics.

Ah. Thanks for the head’s up. I appreciate the intel.

Inky

I always thought I was familiar with the internet until I found this place that proves to me again and again how little i actually do know.

A lot of SDMB members also found this place through FARK. They use to link to Cecil’s articles a lot. Not sure if they still do that.

I thought I was familiar with a lot of things before I found this place.

They occasionaly do. I don’t make it over to Fark a lot anymore (no time at work!) but I see articles from here once in a while, or even links to the boards once or twice.

I haven’t really been back there since I found this place. Imagine if I tried to handle both. I’d never leave the computer chair… Okay, I might not really leave it now as it is, but I do go to my bed every night.

Fark is my main source of news. I like it because it’s so simple - mainly just links to stories - and there are plenty of weird or fun links mixed in with the serious news.

That said, I pretty much only use it for links. I’ll stick to the SDMB for discussions…

Moved this one to General Questions, as it seems to be more suited to that.

“Fark and Fark. What is Fark?”

OK, This is from memory – but I swear this term was mentioned in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy. Can anyone confirm or deny

I ‘waste’ a lot of time reading SomethingAwful as well as Fark and SDMB :smack:

This is true, and I do the same, but one aspect not mentioned before is Fark’s sense of humour. Each link to a “news” story (it may be a serious story or a news of the weird type story) has a little caption explaining what the link or story is. Oftentimes these are very funny. Some of the jokes are sort of in-jokes that take a while reading the site to start appreciating, but many are flat out hilarious.

I also tend only to read these captions and rarely actually click on the links unless for some reason they really peak my interest.

They label each story with a little icon. Serious important news stories have a flashing orange “news” on a black backround. Other icons include “obvious,” “silly,” “wierd,” ironic, “heroic”" etc. Two of note: The “Photoshop” link is for viewers to take a picture that they supply and edit it to create something funny. In this case the normal link (the icon on the left) is not the main thing, but the “discussion” link on the far right that every story also has. That discussion link will contain the posts of all the funny pictures, along with comments. Another set of icons are the “boobies” and “weiners” icons, which link to appropriate pornographic sites (many times free versions of paid sites). The ones labeled “NSWF” are the ones not safe for work, for obvious reasons.

Don’t forget the Wil Wheaton, Christopher Walken and Florida tags.

**It’s NOT news.

It’s FARK.com**

this thread needs more cowbell.

It’s a trap!

The photoshop contests make it well worth the visit.

[humorous] Doper unaware of Fark’s existance. Hilarity ensues
