I like Salon, but my computer doesn’t. I can’t count the number of times I’ve had to restart my computer because I was looking at something on Salon.com and Explorer just froze up – sometimes that happens for only a minute, while all the ads on the page are loading I presume, but sometimes it just stays frozen until I restart. This can happen on the welcome page or in any article linked from it.
I’ve never seen anything like it. Sure, there are a lot of ads on Salon, but there are a lot of ads on a lot of other sites and none of them give me this problem.
Yahoo Mail locks up if you have AdBlock turned on, so maybe that is it. Turn of AdBlock and see if it still freezes. Why the hell is Yahoo intent on committing suicide like that?
what version of Internet Explorer? If you’re stuck with something like IE 8 I feel for you.
usually sites that hang or freeze for a bit are because the browser is chewing through Javascript, or the Flash plugin is hanging up. A lot of the work being done on modern browsers like Chrome, Safari, Firefox, IE11 is in coming up with better Javascript interpreters/compilers.
The Javascript performance of older versions of IE is absolute shit, and frequently freezes it for a while. That is, if it doesn’t just break completely.
Something else about Salon – the Explorer back-button doesn’t work. If I want to go from an article back to the welcome page I need to enter salon.com in the browser-window again. Never had that problem with any other site.
